Van Helsing was my favorite character in this book, although his monologues did go overlong at times. :)

I just started it this morning, I like the writing style and the humor.

Welcome, everyone. Rollie, this is a good time to get started on classics. There are so many available for free if you are interested in ebooks.

Of course. I don't know when I'll start, but I'm planning on November 1-November 30th.
Just jump in when you are ready.

Good luck on your exam, Kwesi.
And welcome to any new members that I haven't welcomed yet.

I am planning to read this in November if someone wants to join me.

I'll join you guys. I will integrate this into my October Scare Fest. Thanks for the excuse to finally read this book, Martha!

Nicolle, I have some of yours on my list. I'll have to join you when you get started.
Treasure Island
Peter Pan
The Lost World
Persuasion

I would like to read
Agnes Grey. If someone else is interested, maybe we can plan on it for November.

Glad you joined us, Lovescaleb. There are a lot of great gems to be discovered in the classics arena.

Welcome, Brianna and Jessie.
I have a fascination with Russian literature (and Russia), Brianna, so I hope to read most of the Russians, as you say.
Jessie, I have not read one book by Austen. (ducking) I plan to change that. On the upside, Jane Eyre is one of my all time faves.

I didn't like Heart of Darkness...at all!

Welcome to all the new members.
Karolina, I must say my favorite type of classics are the horror/gothic novels. :)

I love tv and movies, but movie/tv adaptations are basically one person's idea of a book's content. It's better to read the source material.

I think we are all here to learn and to grow in our appreciation for classics, so it's great we can help each other out.
Your philosophies on classics make a lot of sense, Tia and Hugh.

I agree this story does have some timely themes for modern society, Terri!

Well the truth is that books that we consider classics today were dismissed and disparaged and firmly considered popular fiction, not worthy of consideration. Austen, Dickens, to name a few. So I wouldn't shrug off modern books so as unworthy of classic designation. Fifty years from now, you never know.
