I read
The Sandman by ETA Hoffman yesterday. It's a short story which is one of the first to feature an artificial human.

Welcome to the new members. I apologize for my lack of presence. My online time has been curtailed, so I don't get to come on Goodreads as much. I look forward to chatting about classic with everyone.

Kristen, it's a story that really benefits from rereading. I picked up a lot more on the second read.

That sounds fun. I'd probably start with Great Expectations.
Nicolle, thanks for the warning. I haven't felt the urge to reach for those, so I'd put them very far down on my list.

Hi Sarah. Welcome! Jane Eyre is one of the best classics I've read. It's a good starting point.

Kjerstin, I'm willing to give some of his other books a try, but I'm hoping I don't get too bogged down.

Briohny, I had that experience reading "The Cricket on the Hearth." I gave up on it. It was so boring for me. I loved "A Christmas Carol" though.

Welcome Carol and Jen! Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorites. I think it's fantastic.

I have to agree, Groovy. Books from the past show a snapshot of how it was back then.

Welcome aboard, Laraine.
Now is a good time to get into classics, since so many are available for free as ebooks and online reads.

I'm done with Joyce, but I admire you for trying him again. I would recommend reading Sound and the Fury with cliffnotes. But you might be better than I am at understanding it.

I totally agree with you. I didn't understand The Sound and the Fury when I read it, but I enjoyed it to a certain extent. I wanted to be put out of my misery when I read A Portrait...

Welcome, KatLynne. I love Jane Eyre and Little Women!!!

Kjerstin, I'm glad it wasn't just me who disliked A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man.

Hello to all the newbies.

I love short stories, especially horror and fantasy. The Messenger was about 48 pages. I've read some that were around 100 pages, like The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is 120 or so pages. I like short stories because they are less of a commitment than a longer book. I will definitely add some novels when I get a chance. Part of it is we are reading short stories weekly on the classic horror group.
