41817 Jane Eyre starts out rough, but once you push past the first few pages, it's so worth reading, IMHO. I don't know what it is, but I love Nathaniel Hawthorne. His gothic stylings completely appeal to me.

Anyone else have trouble with Henry James' overly flowery writing style?

41817 I have to agree. There were times where I felt a weight on my soul that made continuing to read hard, but I knew I had to keep going.

41817 Did you end up liking it, Martha? I did, even though it made me feel so many negative emotions. The movie isn't as good as the book, but it's still a great classic horror movie, which is something to respect!

41817 I know what you mean, Martha.

41817 Welcome Dani and Ron.

It's very exciting to see that there are 1000 souls on this group psyched about reading the classics!

41817 I finished this yesterday, and I thought it was very good. Shelley had a way of making my 'loyalties/sympathies' flipflop as I read.

41817 That's true. I love looking forward to the weekends, especially when they aren't booked up.

41817 Hi Jill. I hope things slow down for you this week.

41817 I'm right on target. I'm around chapter 14 right now.

My Thoughts *Might be Spoilers*
* Victor Frankenstein is rather unsympathetic to me. He created this man but then abandoned him and left him to his own devices. It seemed unspeakably cruel and irresponsible of him.
* I feel very sympathetic towards the creature. He has the human emotions that speak to me. His status as an outcast saddens me. He has a brain, a heart, a soul, and all seemed doomed to being deprived because of his ignominous outer appearance.
* Justine's unjust end really bothered me.
* I am finding this surprisingly readable. I thought I would have trouble since it was written in the 18th century. But I'm doing just fine. It helps to have the ability to look up words on my Kindle as I read.
* Shelley writes very well.

41817 Welcome, Orion, Ace and Karoline.

41817 I'm not really that organized, to be honest! I don't think I would do chapter by chapter. Maybe in chapter blocks. We'll see.

41817 I agree, Kwesi!

41817 On The Hobbit thread, some posters are interested in doing a chapter by chapter discussion. I'm not 100% pro that myself, but I think it's cool if some readers do go that way. What do you guys think?

41817 I loved Roxton! He is a little different from in the book, but he captures his spirit pretty well.

41817 I have a question for you.

Should we try to post discussion questions for the group reads? They wouldn't have to be mandatory. I think some readers like a more structured discussion, and some like to wing it. If we have questions, those who are so inclined could use them to structure their discussion thoughts.

41817 This is the discussion thread, Hannah. It's pretty unstructured. Where you looking for specific areas of discussion?
