36119 Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (born November 11, 1922) served in the US Army in World War II. Many of his books have an anti-war theme. Read any anti-war book.

Please use this thread for any questions or comments about task 20.3.

36119 Baltasar and Blimunda was the book that brought prominence to José Saramago (born November 16, 1922). Read any book set at least 51% in the 18th Century (1701-1800). The book may have been first published in the 18th Century and set at the time or it may have been published later and be historical fiction or history.

Please post any questions or comments about task 20.4 in this thread.

36119 10.1 TBR

Read a book you have had on your TBR for more than a year. This task cannot be used for combo. This task may be used only once.

10.2 Octoberfest

Celebrate Oktoberfest by reading a book written by an author born in one of countries hosting Oktoberfest festivities: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Mexico, Palestinian Territories, Romania, United States and Vietnam.

10.3 9, 10, 11

Read a book where any of the author's names begins with the 9th, 10th or 11th letter of the alphabet (I, J, K). If two of the author's names begins with any of these letters, give yourself a Selfie worth 5 points. (Selfie: combos with itself. Good only for this task, qualifies as a style.)

10.4 Series (Ed's Task)

Read a book that is part of a series*.

*For the purposes of RwS, a series should include at least three books. Sometimes a story is complete in two volumes, and those we don't consider a series. If there are only two published books and it is clear the author plans to continue the story, those would be a series.

10.5 Autumn Colors (Rosemary's Task)

Let’s colour a bright season for ourselves! Read a book whose title or subtitle contains any word (except “and”) from this list of Crayola Standard Colors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

You may discount possessives: for example, “Robin’s” is in the list, but “Robin” also works. Otherwise, the match must be exact – so “Robins” (plural) would not work.

Note: The page goes on to show lists of “Specialty Crayons”. These do not count for this task.

10.6 Bless the Animals (Rebekah's Task)

In honor of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, many churches hold ceremonies to bless animals on his feast day of October 4. This has led to World Animal Day which is observed on this day.

For this task read a book that contains animals that talk or is from an animal’s point of view.

Examples would be Charlotte's Web or The Art of Racing in the Rain Books that do not work Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog or Old Yeller

10.7 Geocaching (Kim's Task)

Geocaching is an outdoor adventure for all ages, using GPS coordinates to find a hidden cache.

Read a book with an MPG of Adventure or Outdoors.

10.8 House (Ann's Task)

I love books where the house is essentially a character.

Read a book where a house could be considered a character.

For an example book, The Haunting of Hill House has the perfect opening…
“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.”

For ideas, please see these two lists:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

10.9 NFL! (Anika's Task)

The NFL is starting its 103rd season on September 8th.

Read a book set at least 75% in any of these cities which have a professional football team: Washington D.C., Green Bay, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, San Francisco, Buffalo, Denver, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Dallas, Tampa, Detroit, Baltimore, Miami, Houston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Atlanta, or Cleveland.

There are a few teams that claim entire states or regions, so if you read a book set in North Carolina, Tennessee, Arizona, Minnesota, or New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island) you can claim this task! Please include where your book is set when you post.

15-point sub-challenge: Eyes on the Prize Redux
Aug 26, 2022 11:05AM

36119 Completion Bonuses:

1. Half-way Finish (50 points): Complete all of the 10-point tasks OR all of the 20-point Reading with Style tasks. (Using a book for combo points for a task does not qualify as completing that task).

2. Mega Finish (200 points): Complete all Reading with Style tasks and the 15-point tasks. (30 book minimum -- at least one book claimed for task points for each task. Using a book for combo points for a task does not qualify as completing that task and a book may only be claimed for task points once).

Other Rewards*:
1. Group Reads -- the Winter 2022-23 "group reads" books will be chosen by a combination of moderators, mega-finishers, and members that read at least 5 books and earn the highest percentage of Jumbo points in the Fall 2022 Challenge.

2. 10-point task creation -- the top three readers for the Fall 2022 Challenge, as determined by overall points, will each get to create a 10-point task for the Winter 2022-23 Challenge.

3. 20-point task creation -- the "most strategic" reader, the member that, on average, earns the most points per book (with a 5 book minimum) will have the opportunity to create a 20-point task for the Winter 2022-23 Challenge. In calculating this number, we are taking into account the Task & Style points for the RwS tasks, and the Task, Bonus, and Completion points for the sub-challenge. The Halfway Finish(es) & the Mega-finish will not be included in the calculation, so that members who are unable to read more than 20 books in three months have an equal chance at being the "most strategic reader" as our fastest readers.

4. Random -- All participants (except mods) who claim at least five books during the Fall 2022 season will be automatically entered into a drawing for a $25 US Amazon gift card to be awarded at the beginning of the Winter 2022-23 season. As this will repeat from season to season, the winner will not have won the drawing in either of the two previous seasons.

* although participants may be eligible for multiple rewards, only one will be granted per challenge. (Random excepted)

* Participants that create tasks for three consecutive challenges are ineligible for a task-creation reward on the fourth. Instead, the member will be asked to submit a group read book. Eligibility is reinstated on the following challenge.

Note: Our usual Lexile rules will apply. You can follow one of these links to find pertinent links.

36119 Eyes on the Prize Redux

Another popular sub-challenge, back with a few twists!

Read 10 books, from 10 different award lists (see attached spreadsheet).

For tasks 15.1 – 15.10, your task is to read ten award-winning books from the lists on the linked spreadsheet below, without repeating an award.

Link to the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Scoring:
Each task is worth 15 points.

500 pages or more: 5 pts
1997 or earlier: 5 pts

Finisher bonuses:

+50 points: All awards are within a 10-year period of your choice*
+50 points: All awards are in 10 different 10-year periods of your choice **
+100 points: Completing 10 Awards for EoTP Redux

* You are not required to use the traditional decade (eg 1990s) for your 10-year period. You may choose to define it as 1993-2002 for example. Just be sure to keep your range to 10 years. Pub years for Lifetime Achievement awards may fall outside your 10-year period and still qualify as long as the award year falls within the range. Repeating award years is acceptable.

** Periods cannot overlap: Your 10-year periods do not have to be absolutely consecutive, but no years within your 10-year periods will be contained in another; e.g. 1976-1985 & 1988-1997 work, but 1978-1987 & 1985-1994 do not work because both include 1985, 1986 and 1987. Again, pub years for Lifetime Achievement awards may duplicate a 10-year period and still qualify as long as the award year is within its own 10-year period.

A few notes:
I. You cannot claim regular style points for any book you read for Eyes on the Prize (nor do the EotP tasks count as combo style points for Reading with Style's 10 and 20 point tasks).

II. You can complete EotP three times with one important caveat: you cannot repeat an award. The above written task point & bonus structure will apply to each subsequent round.

III. All books read for this sub-challenge must be at least 100 pages, based on the most popular edition. Exception: You may claim one title from one of the poetry only awards (T.S. Eliot, Poet's Prize, Dorothy Livesay) that has at least 85 pages. All other poetry claims must meet the required 100 page minimum.

IV. Please be aware that although they may be included on one of the lists below cookbooks, illustrated guides, graphic novels are not allowed. Also, books designated as "YA", "Assignment", or "Juv" by the Brooklyn Public Library with a Lexile score less than 800 are not allowed.
