The end was just odd, it wasnt bad though"

It was odd, but I think it was good.

It's Stuart Turton's first books and I think he's done well
35559 I might have missed that reference though!

I am liking Atticus' character so far.

Jean Louise I think is okay so far

I'm not liking Alexandra as a person. She's irritating me with how she is with Jean Louise
35559 No I don't think they did. I thought they just went swimming and Alexandra was scandalised!
35559 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS - Chapters 15-End

17. Gita receives a scare when the SS come for her, it turns out they are actually taking her to Lale for a moment of privacy. Gita is furious because of the terror this caused. Do you think Lale put Gita in dangerous situations? If so, how?

The whole camp is a dangerous situation so I'd say yes. But it worked out for them both so yay!

18. I was surprised to see Jakub again, and as a torturer. He says that "If I must kill one Jew to save ten other, then I will". Do you also believe this? We know that many people in his situation were sometimes deemed "collaborators", do you agree?

I can see where he is coming from. It's still harsh. I don't know if I believe in that. I'd rather no killings happen. If he didn't do as they said, they'd probably kill him and choose someone else.

19. One of the hardest parts of the book for me was this passage, "Something light lands on Lale's head and he looks up. Ash is belching from the nearby creamtorium...They emptied the Gypsy camp last night". What do you think keeps Lale going after these continued heart breaks?

It actually took me a while to realise what this meant. Then when it clicked, I was horrfiied. I think he keeps going for Gita. He wants a life with her outside that camp. And he gets it!

20. Baretski has been with Lale throughout this book, and Lale always seems to just push the edge of the limits in these interactions, even stating that Lale sees, " a world that will bring yours (Baretski's) down". Do you think he was too risky in his dealings with Baretski? And why do you think Baretski refrained from killing Lale throughout the story?

Sometimes I did think that. I thought keeping your head down and not rebelling would be the best way to survive in their situation. I did wonder why Baretski didn't kill Lale and why he helped Lale. I wanted to know if they had any contact outside the camp but I doubt it. I think Baretcki saw something in Lale that he could possibly use

21. Lale's motto was "If you wake up in the morning, it is a good day" - why is it hard for so many people to also adopt this motto in today's world?

We have it easy and we don't know hardship. Well, I don't at least. Other countries do know hardship and I'm sure they find light in their mostly dark world.

22. If you also read our previous BOM, Lilac Girls, did you prefer one way of storytelling over the other? And does this being a true story impact you any differently?
I didn't read Lilac Girls.
Yeah it has. I've thought about it quite a bit since I read it. Not many books do that to me.
35559 I sort of don't want to finish it D:

Where are you up to now? I'm up to Chapter 12 (1/2 through) and I'm going to stop for today.

I feel like everything up to chapter 11 could have been condensed.

I have 3hrs and 32 minutes left of the audiobook. Reece Witherspoon is actually a good narrator
35559 I do agree!

I don't know if I'm taking in everything with the audiobook. I can't remember how (view spoiler)

I'm listening to chapter 8 now. I am finding it that it's going a bit slow. I'm not liking it as much as To Kill a Mockingbird

35559 That makes me so happy Nicole! Haha

35559 Nicole - The start date is the start of this challenge. So, I've done what I can and have added books that we've previously read for this challenge into the characters.

Primary Characters are all finished - Ron, Harry and Hermione.

Major Character are mostly done expect for Remus (we need an 'E'), Luna, Albus, Neville, Rubeus and Ginny

Minor Characters - Still have a fair bit...

From what I've gathered, we could probably finish these but we need a lot of 'U's, 'E's, a few 'V's and 'Y's and probably 'N's and 'L's.

I hope your books have a 'U' or 'E' in them Talia!

35559 **ATTENTION ALL**

A few hours ago the mods posted another mini challenge... Characters!

It's a spell-it-out like Spells, but for characters. The link is here for information about characters.

Halli and I will add previously read books to the characters tab when we have time.

Any books you read and add from now on, could you all please write what other letters we could use that book for?

Thank team!

35559 Thanks Zee! I’ll update it tomorrow.

I agree. I’ve just read a Sarah Dessen book just to get back to normal after the tattooist. Though I’ve found myself thinking about the book a lot

35559 You don’t have to drop out.

But yes, bom and page points will continue in through August

Triwizard starts July 31st but you don’t have to participate in it.
You can just do page points if you want to continue in the challenge.

35559 I’ve finally started tonight! I’m really liking it. I just want to put life in pause and read a few chapters at least.

I’ll look at all your comments properly once I’ve read a bit more

35559 Yup! Sounds good Devann
35559 I'm listening to this via audiobook whilst I drive to work an uni. So far - I've listened to 5 minutes. Reece Witherspoon is the narrator. I might listen from the start again. I might have missed a bit.
35559 I didn't understand why it was the plague doctors. Maybe they resemble the grim reapers the most?
35559 How did you find this Abbie?

I must have lost track of this thread - sorry!

Did you follow it well?
35559 The hand sanitiser bits were a bit hard to read. To let one's state of mental health get that far is pretty extreme. Glad she didn't go for anything stronger!

I must admit, when I learnt about microbiology (virus and bacteria), I did go a bit germaphobic. I trusted nothing and no one but I've relaxed since then going back to my normal state (mostly). I can see where she's coming from

I'd be happy to read The Chalk Man starting after August 2nd. I can't get it any sooner from the library

35559 Is anyone interested in reading
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden Still Me (Me Before You #3) by Jojo Moyes The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson ?
