I'll move onto the POISON books. I might read The Obelisk Gate instead of One Came Home, but either would count for my O.

No worries, Trina! I asked for updating privilege so we can share the load :) Maybe others can too? I'm not sure how that works.
What are our next steps fearless leader? I'm ready with my SafeZone book - dessert mystery one!

Flowers in a wreath on the front, 3 roses on the back, plus other little flowers.
Again, no penalties please! I finished that Saturday evening / night.

Marlon James is from Jamaica.
Yes, no penalties for that one :) I was so proud that I finished it on time! What a book!

That is a great question. It is a very different read. The only other book I could compare it to is The Famished Road which I read a long time ago. While I was reading it, I also read some interviews with Marlon James, and found out he read The Famished Road 4 times while writing this one! So that makes sense. The book does not have a clear plot line. One of the characters, Sodogo, often says "I'm confused," and I would shout out "I'm with you." It has a focus - but that doesn't come in until part way through the book. It reads like a twisted dream, narrows out a bit to make sense, and then twists back again. There is a lot of sex and violence - the body count (and limb count?) is high. (If you are okay with Game of Thrones / Neil Gaiman's American Gods / Louise Edrich / China Mieville it would probably be alright)
That said, I really liked some of the characters. I am intrigued by what happened, and the world building. I will be sure to read one of the sequels - there are two in the works, told by two of the characters I understand the least. After reading many interviews with Marlon James (to better understand what happened - this I recommend, as his earlier influences definitely play out in this book) I think there is a lot of symbolism in this book, which I love.
Our local bookstore is having a discussion about it tomorrow, which I am very glad to be attending!
A long answer, but it is a long, strange ride of a book! I listened to some of it on Book on Tape - and Dion Graham (from The Wire) has a beautiful voice - and there are some songs which really come to life when he sings them.

With a straight plot line, and my reading speed increased, it shouldn't take more than an hour or two.
