Chapters 1 -6
1. Have you read anything by Ruth Ware before? Why did you decide to join this read?
This is my first Ruth Ware book. It sounded interesting and for the BOM.
2. I have the impression that Lo suffered panic attacks and slight claustrophobia even before the break-in. Do you think there's much more to her past than we've been told so far?
I think she may have an anxiety problem which was triggered by the break-in causing the panic attacks and claustrophobia.
3. Theories on the break-in? Does a burglar wear latex gloves and lock the occupant of the house in their bedroom while ransacking the place? How would he know she didn't have a phone in her room? Seems there's more going on here than a simple burglary
It does seem that the person who burglarized her is familiar with her and her house.
4. I can't quite imagine the boat. She said it isn't much bigger than a yacht and yet the descriptions make it sound quite large. Your thoughts?
It's a large yacht!
5. Ok stupid question, but would you borrow mascara from someone?! (What a way to get an eye infection!) And also on this very expensive ship full of rich people the lady gives her Maybelline mascara which is a realtively cheap brand. A clue she doesn't belong there perhaps?
I would never borrow mascara from someone. For this to be such a luxury trip for limited people I would think the guests would not use a drug store mascara.
6. Have you ever been so overly tired but not able to sleep? Do you think Lo is paranoid due to her lack of sleep and anxiety or is there someone watching her?
I think it is a combination of lack of sleep and anxiety.
7. Do you like the writing style? Is it an effective way to build suspense by using the emails to give us a glimpse in the future before going back to present day?
So far I am enjoying the writing style and story.

June 22nd - chapter 1
1. I love the first line of this book, “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” What do you think? Did it draw you in right away? Do you think it sets the tone for the book?
I think it's a good first line that draws you in and sets the tone for the book. It sort of summarizes the objective of the MC and possibly the book.
2. Why do you think the Gunslinger is chasing he man in black? Will he catch him? What will he do if / when he does?
I believe it's part of the gunslingers life journey or objective.
3. What do you think of the world building or the world the story is set in? I find it interesting that there are so many differences and yet some similarities to our world, like the singing of “Hey Jude.” It feels a bit like our world has seeped into theirs.
4. What or who do you think the man in black is? He certainly seems to have some special powers, but with evil undertones. Any ideas yet?
I believe the man in black is some type of sorcerer or the devil in some form.
5. Why do you think the townsfolk were so anti-gunslinger? Was it just because of what he represents as a gunslinger, because he’s a stranger, or because of the man in black? Some other reason?
I think the man in black did something to cause the townsfolk to react that way.
6. What do you think of what happened in Tull? Was there another way for the gunslinger to leave the town without the destruction that occurred or do you think it was necessary or predestined? When Brown asked him if he felt bad about it, the gunslinger said, “Why would I feel bad?” Do you think that’s just because of his training or maybe he believed there was no other way or maybe he just lacks empathy for the death of others?
I believe he had to do it to protect himself and since he believed this was the only way is why he didn't feel bad.
7. What do you think of the story so far? Anything you particularly like or don’t like?
It is ok.
Day 2 Questions: June 23rd - chapter 2-3
8. I am really enjoying the strong sense of place that King invokes through the senses. Can you share a book that you've really enjoyed that had a strong sense of place?
I would say that the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews creates a strong sense of place.
9. At The Way Station, the gunslinger is told to "Go slow past the Drawers gunslinger. While you travel with the boy, the man in black travels with your soul in his pocket" - what do you think this means?
I think it means that the Gunslinger will get attached to the boy which the man in black will use against him.
10. What do you think is Jake's role in the story?
Jake is referred to as the sacrifice. He may also be included as a symbol of the gunslingers humanity.
11. We begin to learn more of the gunslingers past and what he was like as a boy - do you still see those parts of him as a man?
12. We've seen so much darkness in the story so far, it was striking to hear about light when the gunslinger spoke of New Canaan. The gunslinger recalls his mom saying, "the only real beauty is order and love and light" - do you think there is hope in this world for love and light?
I think there is or the gunslinger wouldn't be fighting for something.
