The best laid schemes of mice and men

Go often askew,

And leave us nothing but grief and pain,

For promised joy!

~From To A Mouse by Robert Burns, 1785

Robert Burns wrote that poem after ploughing up a mouse nest, accidentally. If I’ve learned anything this summer-of-trying-to-get-Enya’s-Son-to-readers, it’s that despite my best efforts, my plans may fail. Well, this didn’t fail, just didn’t unfo...

“She lifted the book to her nose. A book had a smell more soothing than any of Mrs. Hawkins's herbs. There was nothing like a good story to take her out of a world she didn't much like.”
Cindy Thomson, Annie’s Stories

“He was an average-looking, hard working fellow who was more comfortable reading about people in books than socializing with them.”
Cindy Thomson, Annie’s Stories

“Not all those who wander are lost.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“The Celt, and his cromlechs, and his pillar-stones, these will not change much – indeed, it is doubtful if anybody at all changes at any time. In spite of hosts of deniers, and asserters, and wise-men, and professors, the majority still are adverse to sitting down to dine thirteen at a table, or being helped to salt, or walking under a ladder, of seeing a single magpie flirting his chequered tale. There are, of course, children of light who have set their faces against all this, although even a newspaperman, if you entice him into a cemetery at midnight, will believe in phantoms, for everyone is a visionary, if you scratch him deep enough. But the Celt, unlike any other, is a visionary without scratching.”
W.B. Yeats

“Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.”
Jessamyn West
