35559 I was incorrect about task #42 being for a Booker prize. Although we will see a Booker prize task.

#42 is for the INTERNATIONAL Booker prize. Here is the list:
https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...

For this one, the mods will also take nominees. (For the eventual Booker prize task, they will only take winners.)

35559 Vi, that's an excellent point about filling up the compulsory page criteria - we are progressing on chipmunks nicely, but we MUST do those pages, so it's great that we can progress on both.

35559 For our new task - "read a booker" - we are verifying in the captain's group but I'm 99% sure It's read a book that has won the Booker prize.

Here's a website that lists them:
https://thebookerprizes.com/the-booke...

And here is the Goodreads list - but it also contains nominees - so be sure if you choose one it actually won :)

I was incorrect about it being a Booker prize (although a future task will be one of these and the above links will apply. I'll put the correct below.

Put a Ring on It (Ready or Knot, #1) by K.A. Mitchell"

I looked up the definition of bling and the dictionary says: flashy jewelry worn especially as an indication of wealth or status - so although it's jewelry I think we need something flashier. I'm sorry! In the captains group when people are asking, they are being fairly strict, so I think it's best to be more blingy (a new made up word).

I'm so glad you loved it! And (as you might have seen) it works for a chipmunk task!

35559 Kirsten - I'm not finding Pinot and Pineapple Lumps on your TT shelf (or your read shelf). If you can get it on there, I'll move that chipmunk task over. Thanks!

35559 I was able to fill in a couple from banked books too- the Adult mpg and the best of 2022 so yay!! All of the teams have to be updated this weekend so we will get a good glimpse of where we stand :)

35559 I'd agree with what Kirsten said about the bling - I'm pretty sure it has to be some sort of jewelry. I'll get the Treasure book checked in :)

35559 Oops - I'm glad you noticed that! I'll make sure I have that straight and get it turned in - thanks a bunch!

35559 @Janeylou - can you put Vanilla Spiced Omega on your Tower Team shelf?

35559 So crazy! That's a ton in a bit over a week.

Thanks so much for fixing things Shannon! The two chipmunk tasks are checked in. We have another China task.

I looked on Wikipedia and around and I think since a significant portion of the story takes place in pre-WWII China for Kitchen Gods Wife, it works ok. It isn't just a brief visit there.

Here is what https://www.encyclopedia.com/arts/enc... says:
A novel set predominantly in China from around 1911 to 1949 and set in America around the time of publication; published in 1991.

35559 Oh shoot - I'd better verify that one.

But...our spreadsheet is looking weird to me (our planning sheet) and I'm not sure what is going on.

35559 Kirsten wrote: "For Chinese authors, does Chinese American writing about Chinese Americans work? I’m looking for an excuse to read Siren Queen. I loved Vo’s [book:The Chosen and the Beautiful|54102..."

I would guess probably not since it is worded "author from China" and "set in China". But those sound like wonderful books!

35559 Some books that fit the China prompts that I enjoyed or at least didn't hate:
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan - set in China (partly) and written by a Chinese author. I've actually enjoyed most of Amy Tan's books - I've listened to most of them and the narrators have been good.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See I've heard good things but haven't read it. It's on my tbr.

The Good Earth (House of Earth, #1) by Pearl S. Buck a Pulitzer prize winner - not an easy read (I thought) but I was glad I read it.

The Wild Orchid A Retelling of The Ballad of Mulan by Cameron Dokey - I just found this one on the list and it has been on my TBR forever, so after I finish my current book I'll see if we still need one of those prompts.

35559 Oh and note to team: I have a LOT of company coming this weekend - about 13 people - so I will do our weekly update on Monday. Hmm...and I think I already said that - sorry if I'm repeating myself! I did update the man spreadsheet on Tuesday and will do that again on Saturday. It's interesting looking at the totals - I think we're doing so well because you all are checking all the boxes, with # of books read, books of the month, mini-challenges, and some long books read. Well done!

35559 Wow I love how proactive and positive you all are!

@Janeylou - I had missed your comment about reading a treasure book earlier - I put a note in the spreadsheet that you are reading one. I glanced through and didn't see an already completed book with the letters in Treasure.

@Nanci - way to finish those books and move on to King. I'm listening to it, and it's going much faster than I anticipated, probably because it is engrossing. The narrator is quite good. And...I've had a lot of housecleaning to do.

@Vi - I just finished it too. I liked the ending as far as being quite a surprise. I'd say maybe just find summaries online since you don't want to read the other books and you can see what happens that way :) I hope you enjoy our doorstopper!

@Lisa - thanks for the reminder about completed books! So...if anyone has a book with bling on the cover that you completed earlier this month, claim that task :)
35559 DQs Day 5
Chapters 19 - 23

9. In this section there appears to be a love triangle developing. Was this what you expected. Where do you see this going? I for sure saw a love triangle type thing going on but I think Nahri is more interested in Dara as a love interest

10. Dara lets Nahri know about the King’s marriage plans for her. He lets her know that they can’t be together. Are his reasons valid or should Nahri put up more of a fight?
I suppose they are kind of valid because continuing her bloodline seems important. But other than that....So she'd need to decide.

11. Ali and Nahri both have a hidden agenda and are using their “friendship” to achieve that. Do you think they are aware of each other’s objective?
I don't think they are aware of each other's objective, but they seem to be gaining some liking and respect of one another.

12. We learn that Ali has a separate agenda that the King is not aware of? Where do you see this heading? I think that he'd better be careful - it's a serious thing to cross the king. And I don't think his brother will help him as much as Ali imagines.
