This was stated in the Mini 1 rules, and will apply to all the minis. Looks like it will apply to birthplace as well in order to avoid confusion.
◈ Contemporary boundaries are to be used in determining which country a book takes place in and if it is not clear, save everyone the headache and use it for a different task. Please and thank you.

I think that works, but I'm going to double check it in the Captain's Group.

Also, re: Whale Eyes. It is MPG Childrens. I couldn't find it on arbookfind, but the audio is long enough to count.

This was address in the captain's group. It is the birthplace. So this one would be Peru.
Nalini Singh's bio says she was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. So she's Fiji, not New Zealand.

However, the next book in the series, Timothy of the Cay, is 34,179. So if your library has that one, it works.

Unfortunately The Cay is MPG Childrens. Books that are MPG Childrens require a word count to check that they work for the challenge. They must be at least 30,000 words. Using arbookfind.com, The Cay shows 26,145 words so it doesn't work for the challenge.

@Bernadette - can you please add a read date for House Rules to your GRs shelves?

Read a book first published in May of any year
Read a book that is #3 in a series (Or last book in a trilogy)

I have a book club at the beginning of June for which I need to re-read Project Hail Mary. So after I finish the audios I already committed to, I can do Sci-Fi if no one else takes you up on this one.

The answer to this comes on several levels:
1. No, there is no completion bonus on the itineraries.
2. Each itinerary requires at least 3 medium and at least 2 hard countries. At the basic level, this is why we can't only do hard countries.
3. We can use banked books for mini #2. But only for mini #2.
There are over 1,000 prompts for that one, so the chances that we'll be able to fit every banked book in are pretty high.
4. There is no point difference between medium countries and books used for the other 2 minis.
I know it can be a little frustrating at the beginning of large challenges like this that require books to be started after the start date. But keep reading we'll get all the books fit into the tasks! As we begin to have banked books, we may go through multiple new tasks with banked books before we get to something that we need a new book for. So every book will count!

However, HoopLa does have the audios of another of that trilogy as well as another trilogy of hers that I started and never got around to finishing. So when I finish what I have claimed already, if no one has grabbed the German author task I will.

I am getting situated and going thru my TBR pile to see what books will fit the tasks. I have thus far ... committed to listening to

So you want to add your book to the "Books" tab. This is where we are building our Tower for the challenge. For "Pages" you put how many pages your book is (obviously), but in the case of an audiobook you click on "Show All Editions" on your book's main page. Then you use the page count of the first listed edition. In this case 320 pages.
For the mini challenges, you fill in columns K & L. Using this task/book as an example, you look at the task on the mini 2 tab. Column A has a number. For this task it is 11. You then go back to the Books tab and put 11 in column L. This will actually pull all of your book info into the mini tab. In column K you put the reason, in this case "First published in 1853".
When you finish the book you only need to add the date read to your book on the Books tab. That will be pulled into the min tab as well.
I understand the end results of the formulas, but I would have no idea how to go about creating them, so I chalk it all up to the magic of the spreadsheet gods!

I'll take a look for you and check. The fear of messing up on the spreadsheet is real!

Read a book that was originally published before 1900

There's a lot I could say in regards to all that but I won't--I'm just going to say--I still disagree 🤣

I've been on teams when the heavier reader drops out and it messes up the team. I've also been the heavier reader (I used to read closer to 60 books/month) and felt the pressure. I see the validity in your complaint, but I also see the validity of the reasoning on the part of the mods.

It's a deal! But just to be clear, I do read lots of different stuff. Anything except straight up horror (horror adjacent I can usually do if I need one for a challenge).

Remember, books have to be STARTED after the countdown hits zero.
I've got an audio, a physical book, and ebook to finish up today to be ready for tomorrow!

I saw that Twisted Love is tagged Book 75 times and is included with an Audible membership. I grabbed the audio, but I have several audios I already committed to, so if someone else wants to grab it (or anything else, of course), go for it.
