Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries (Emily Wilde, #1) by Heather Fawcett - February 2 BOM

35559 DQs Day 1

1. Emily finds herself in a very cold, snowy location, and worries about surviving the cold.
What do you think of the setting?
have you ever found yourself in similar surroundings, and how did you cope, or how do you believe you will cope if you haven't?
Also splitting logs... Would you manage like a boss, or risk loss of limbs?
I'm not sure that I'm a natural-born survivor, but if I knew that the place I was travelling to would be cold and snowy, I would try to make sure to be much better prepared than Emily.
Honestly, I felt a bit baffled, that she claims that she had been at field trips in Russia, etc, but seems to lack even the most basic skills of building a fire, etc.
I'm also not a skilled lumberjack, but I hope I would fare better than her.

2. How do you feel about footnotes? *
While these footnotes are clearly not reaching to Pratchettian heights , I'm generally OK with them here and elsewhere. 😊

3. In a world where the existence of faeries is an established fact, would you consider dryadology as a profession?
A resounding NO. But I may be one of those persons who'd be leaving food offerings or other small stuff for them. Better to be safe than sorry.

4. What do you think of Emily so far? And Bambleby?
I kind of like Emily , but dislike her at the same time? even though this is a re-read. I like that she's really smart in some ways and dislike how clueless she is in some practical skills. Absent-minded professor is OK, but you can push that a bit too far.

For some reason I didn't like Bambleby on first read and still don't.

Even though his name suggests a Fae Oscar Wilde (Bambleby-Bunbury) alter ego.

35559 #8 Gemini (The House of Niccolo, #8) by Dorothy Dunnett

4,33 stars

A very worthy conclusion to this amazing historical fiction series. Had a few bones to pick with it, but all in all, very happy that I finally read all the books and some time I will re-read/listen to them.

Oh, please put it there, Sammy!!! 😍

I'll get to reading that one, but it'll take some time.

---------------

Update: I have moved your book for 1950s setting. 😁
35559 Works for me too. 😊

35559 My Amber Spyglass can go under book 3. :))
Jan 30, 2025 04:28AM

35559 Cat,

is there any type of reunion in your Mary Barton book? If yes, let's slot it for that task, too.

My Amber Spyglass may only be the 3rd book only, I'll be reading for UNO/the Tolkien challenge.

35559 😆
35559 Also a re-read, but it will be good to refresh the experience before going on to book 2.

So, in for DQs. :)

should have just stuck to the movie!!"

I was utterly disgusted by the book and the real Julie.

Saw the movie first and did not understand why Julia didn't want to meet her. I totally got the why after the book.

35559 #7 The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, #2) by Philip Pullman

3,5 stars

Took me aaaages to finally grab this book and read it after book 1, but finally got there.

I can tell that had I read this as a kid, I may not have liked/understood it that much. I felt really interested while I was reading it and will finish book 3 soon (hopefully), but altogether I'm just not very taken with this series.

35559 Ahh, what a happy coincidence! I'm in. Will see what I will come up with. 🤭

35559 I will claim 1950s setting but won't start before 1 Feb, so it can be kicked out if something turns up sooner.

35559 Karen ⊰✿ wrote: " never thought I would read it, and then after we re-read the trilogy last year I decided to pick it up. It is hard to live up to those first books, but I thought she did a good job at exploring Snow as a teenager"

I don't think I'd ever have read it, if it wasn't for The Book Games. 😊
But those buddy reads made me appreciate the original trilogy much more & made me curious about young Snow.
I agree, Collins managed to draw an interesting and credible picture of him, but the book as a whole just wasn't as strong as the "originals".

That said, I'm totally going to read Haymitch's book when it gets published. 🙃

35559 #6
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins

3 stars, it was good, but it just could not throw the punch of the original novels for me.
Narration was so and so, not a patch on Tatiana Maszlany.

35559 Thank, Cat.

I'll check out the Dragon tag. :)

Tagged "dragons" 1447 times. That'll suffice. 😉

And of course hidden passageway/doorway is there.
🤭
Though our HU edition is an annotated one, so it's over 300.
