35559 I nominate Dark Lord of Derkholm Dark Lord of Derkholm (Derkholm, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones by Diana Wynne Jones

A hilarious adventure about a fantasy world in danger of destruction from that most vile of threats… tourism .Winner of the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature in 1999.

A humorous fantasy from Diana Wynne Jones. In a world next door to ours, the tourist industry is devastating the population by its desire to experience all the fantasy clichés - Dark Lords, impoverished villages, dragons etc.

The Head of the University resolves to shut the tours down; the only problem being the ruthless tour-master - and his all-powerful demons. To save them all, the incompetent wizard Derk is appointed as Dark Lord in the hope that he will ruin the tours, and sure enough proceeds to fail at everything due to his general uselessness. But can failing at everything lead to a win this time?
35559 Volunteering for DQs (Interior Painting) and throwing in an extra credit, please.
35559 I'm in obviously and if I can get the nominator's usual day 1 that would be great. Thank you. :)

35559 lol, yes, I'm totally baffled by the absence of a piano in a Trollope novel. Preposterous!! :D
Oct 27, 2024 10:26PM

35559 I may have mistakenly thought it must have a piano in text. :))
Oct 27, 2024 09:36PM

35559 Elisabeth,

I was probably checking the formulas for the mini tabs and just clicked on piano next to your book to see if it was working then forgot to remove

Please delete it if there's no piano in texr.

35559 Elisabeth,

Glad to meet another Trollope fan. :)

Love both his Palliser & Barchester books (also read a few individual novels). One of my all-time favourite books is Batchester Towers.

35559 MY MONTHLY RECOMMENDATION (and why):

The Unicorn Hunt (The House of Niccolo, #5) by Dorothy Dunnett - this is book 5 of the House of Niccolo series, but I can wholeheartedly recommend these books if you like Historical fiction.
Author Dorothy Dunnett is magnificent and should be more widely known and read. The narrator John Banks is fantastic - he narrates all books for this series.

The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next, #1) by Jasper Fforde - this is a favourite book/series of mine, but this was the first time I listened to the audiobook version. Great, crazy literary fun book with good narration.

Uncle Fred in the Springtime by P.G. Wodehouse - simply hilarious in the true Wodehouse style and Jonathan Cecil is a great narrator.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman - once again, a favourite book (I'm a bit more ambiguous about Gaiman's other books) and the full-cast narration suits it very well. Karen recommended this to me, so thank you. 🥰

Thank you, Lisa.😊

- I also enjoyed bleak house and Little Dorrit is more enjoyable imo. Fantastic reads"

Oh, good to know!! I'm looking forward to it. I find that Dickens works for me (even) better on audio, so I'm going for the audiobook narrated by Juliet Stevenson whom I like very much. :)

35559 After the final updates, we finished in 2nd place for Round 1 which is absolutely great !! Fantastic reading, Team!! Nothing Inferior about our painting. 🤭🥰 🥳

So, keep those books (doorstoppers ;) coming.

Having said that, for the next few days I'll be only able to read shorter books, but after we are back from our travels, I'm planning to finally tackle Little Dorrit, which is next on my Dickens-TBR and a few other books over 600 pages. 😊
