I’m continuing my re-read for the 2025 read-along of the Innkeeper Chronicles via the Dramatized Adaptations by GraphicAudio.
=====
SPOILER FREE REVIEW

I re-read Clean Sweep before picking up Sweep in Peace. I wanted to enjoy the beginning again and be up to date. It's not necessary, but I loved it all over and it helped to refresh my memory of the events that took place.

I also made sure to not read any reviews before going in. I wanted everything to be a surprise and it was.

WOW! AMAZING! EMOTIONAL!

OMG Sweep In Peace had me glued to the pages. I love how much detail the authors put into their characters and world. It makes everything that much more real. This one was darker not because of violence, but because of the emotional upheavals that take place for the characters involved.

The Andrews team takes us on a heart wrenching journey of manipulation, deceit, and emotions. This is not a walk in the park. War has permanent consequences for the living and as a reader you can't escape this knowledge.

Fans of The Edge series (previous work of the Andrews team) may or may not recognize some characters that show up. I will tell you, I did not recognize them until I read another reviews review and then I was like "Oh My", it's not the happy story I was hoping for for those characters, but wow.

The Andrews team is one author that's a MUST READ!! This latest installment in the Innkeepers Chronicles is awesome, terrible, and will make you cry..

Audio Aug. 2018: OMG the audio is superb. The narrator has the voice down pat. I cried. Yep, I cried a lot. The emotions of all the characters comes across so strong that tears where running down my face. Highly Recommend series to read or listen too.

Graphic Audio Aug. 2022: WOW a movie for the mind. Oro was so much fun to listen too and many the memories scene was so POWERFUL. All of it was OUTSTANDING. Loved it!

I should have done any number of things yesterday: laundry, cooking, reading my book club novel for instance. But this long awaited audiobook came in for me at the library and I abandoned all responsibilities to listen to it. I really can't say that I regret it.

I wouldn't bother with a regular audiobook, but these graphic audio versions are full cast. They are like listening to a radio play production. It is interesting to realize that my mental pronunciations are sometimes incorrect. I gave entirely the wrong emphasis to the Khanum's title. I've also realized that I pronounce the word “shone" differently than the actors. I noticed this in the Murderbot recordings too. I don't know if I'm just off base or if Canadians and Americans say it differently. I say it “shawn" and the actors say “shown."

Funny details stick out like that. However it was highly enjoyable and now the wait for the third book begins. (Actually I've had it on hold at the library for a while, but whatever). No doubt I will drop everything when it becomes available too.

Once again, a great, enjoyable full-cast rendition by Graphic Audio.

I am so glad I gave this edition a chance. Fully recommended in any format, but especially this one. 😊

Original Review

Dear Traveller! Welcome to the lovely Gertrude Hunt Inn B&B, in the town of Red Deer, Texas.
A perfect place to rest and relax, where your every need will be catered to by your caring Innkeeper, Dina Demille. Walk around the lovely, shady orchard; sit on the porch; sip a glass of lemonade in company of the gentle, aristocratic lady, permanent resident of the Inn & most wanted, killer tyrant of the universe (addicted to FunYun and YelloMello).

Besides the Inn’s unique capability of self-defense, security level is heightened by the presence of an alpha-strain werewolf. Entertainment for ladies is provided by the occasional appearance of a heartthrob, chivalric vampire warrior who, when drunk on coffee, gets all his clothes off and runs around the garden in the nude. When sober, same vampire may offer physical exercise to gentlemen and flirts with ladies. (I mean, who could resist a vampire who reads the Twilight series as social research to win a lady's heart?)

Normally I don’t do gushing, but the authors Ilona Andrews just make me do it almost all the time.

OMG, I LOVED EVERY SINGLE PAGE of this book.

From page one I fell hook, line and sinker for the story and the characters, especially the Inn, Gertrude Hunt, itself. She is every woman’s dream: self-defending, self-cleaning, self-decorating with an underground storage for unwanted rooms and with doors opening to the most renown intergalatical market and other planets. From now on she is my best-loved literary character to whom noone can compare.

description

The other MC, Dina, the Innkeeper, as a caregiver and homemaker kind of person, is very relatable to me. At the same time she is smart, resourceful and compassionate.

Crush on Arland is confirmed.

I have read this one and listened to this one a few times, but this was my first time experiencing it with Graphic Audio.

So, the following review is my original thoughts and I enjoyed my first impressions there. I feel more mildly about that imbalance part of Dina and Sean's relationship and about the slight flatness in the story when Sean was absent. In truth, this is my favorite book of the series for all the intrigue and the way all the characters interact as a whole.

The Graphic Audio version with multiple voices, music, and sound effects was easy to return to after the first book and I enjoyed it even more.

Original Review:
For the sake of her inn's prosperity, Dina accepts the challenge of hosting a peace conference between three warring factions and an arbitrator who controls everything like a chess board. Providing the proper services of inter-galactic hospitality while keeping those in her care from killing themselves- and hey, maybe even her, will the inn be standing at the end of it all? It was exciting to see it all play out with a few twisty surprises to really keep Dina on her toes.

Sweep in Peace is book two of the Innkeeper Chronicles. This series works best in order as this one assumes the reader knows the characters and world building introduced in the earlier, Clean Sweep.

This one got off to a slow, but steady start and built up to a crisis point that was breathtaking and a real pageturner. During the build up, its a table setter time where details are important as is the time needed to get to know the three factions and the arbitrating team (this group will be familiar as minor crossover characters from the Edge series).

Dina has time to wonder about Sean the werewolf and about her parents and there is a sense of reflective sadness about it. I missed Sean's presence too because of the sparks and snappy dialogue the pair got up to in the earlier book. I never got bored, but I did feel the pace.

Caldenia the permanent guest and Orro the temperamental cook lend color and needed light-hearted balance to what can otherwise seem heavier on the atmosphere than the earlier book. And for those feeling the need for resolution of the Spider plot from the Edge series, they get it here in the prologue when George, Jack, and Gaston wrap that up and start in on a new venture that eventually Sophie joins them. Also, there was a tiny Claude deMille sighting that comes quickly, but shows where he is and what he's doing.

From my perspective, I felt this was a time when Dina's character was more revealed. Dina is one who needs control (goes back to losing her parents and also growing up in an inn when everyone, but the innkeeper is moving on) and that includes being in on the game plan so when she must stand to the side and watch George, the arbitrator, control the show, she seethes (and she has a point when things start to go down a certain way). Watching Dina cope with another mind more complex and cunning (and definitely more ruthless) than her own was actually what kept the slower, earlier pace from getting boring. In the first book, I felt she was a bit cocky because Sean knew nothing about the broad universe of alien worlds out there and she has the magic of the inn backing her of which she is also knowledgeable so she ran things in that adventure and even found amusement as Sean stumbled along. While this time around, what she knew and understood was not near good enough and she had to wrestle with that and then step up to play her role in the affair when the time came. But, to be fair to Dina, George was pretty high-handed and he counted on her strong sense of duty to do her job as Innkeeper at cost to herself and to step up when he was able to put her in the know.

But that said, this book was not lacking in excitement. Dina had her usual skirmish with local human law enforcement suspicious of the goings on at the inn, there is a theft to solve and later a murder attempt not to mention two warrior species out to kill each other while staying at the inn. The authors built things nicely to the point and delivered that intense finish.

I will be pressing on with this series and recommend it highly to sci-fi and urban fantasy lovers alike.

I read some reviews from people who read the book and then listend to the GraphicAudio audiobook. This is an abridged version of the book, but because I never read the books, I don't know where they left things out.

I can only say that I loved this Version of Sweep in Peace. I listend to it in a day. It takes so many twists and turns, without getting boring. I enjoyed listening to it and looking forward to start the next book.

Re-read starting June 7, 2025, finished June 11, 2025.

=============
After enjoying the first Innkeeper Chronicles story, Clean Sweep, as a graphic audiobook, I decided to give the second book, Sweep in Peace, a try.

I read the ebook (11/2015) and listened to the original audiobook (4/2016) and enjoy the story immensely (reviews found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...). This review will focus solely on the graphic audiobook aspect of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the full cast production of Sweep in Peace. Having listened to the graphic audiobook of the first story in the series, the performances of both the primary narrator and returning supporting cast are familiar and pleasant. The production features Nora Achrati as the solitary narrator, Dina Demille. The story is shared via her first person POV, so the majority of the audiobook is performed by Ms. Achrati, who has a solid southern accent and adds a lot of emotion into her performance. After listening to the first two books, she has become Dina for me, and I don’t know if I’d like anyone else playing her part. She’s captured Dina’s sensitivity, hope, and frustration perfectly.

Each character’s dialogue is performed by a different cast member - just like a play or TV production. Other standouts are Scott McCormick as chef Orro and Karen Novack as Lady Caldenia ka ret Magren. Both do wonderful jobs breathing life into the characters, creating personas that match the written descriptions, nailing the subtle comic relief each provides. And I’m going to believe it’s a brilliant casting nod to Star Trek, as the vampire engineer has a Scottish accent. Overall, the characters are well cast and performances full of energy and emotion.

In the first book, I didn’t find the background music of any value to the story, and in fact, it was a distraction several times. However, this time around either the production team did a better job matching the music to the scene and keeping the volume at an enjoyable level, or I became accustomed to the music, because I really didn’t notice it much. And if I did, I felt it was suitable.

Once again, I enjoyed the sound effects. Some, like inanimate objects moving (door creaking), dogs barking, and the magic chimes of the Inn are successful and add to the performance quite a lot. They are well-timed and don’t overpower the narration.

In the end, I really enjoyed the Dramatized Adaptation version of Sweep in Peace and look forward to listening to the rest of the books in the series.

My Audiobook Rating: A- (performance only)

I highly recommend trying a Graphic Audiobook, they're very entertaining.
As for the Innkeeper Chronicles, each new chapter feels way too short and I'm excited to keep listening to more of them. Sadly, my library only has one more episode.
The romance is extremely Slow Burn! In fact, I would say there is very little actual romance going on at all. Normally that would make me not enjoy a book, I love romance and even more so a good slow-burn romance, when there's little to no romance going on I typically get bored. That has not been the case with the Innkeeper Chronicles so far. In fact, I'm less interested in the romance than the actual storyline of this series.
Not that I don't want to see how it works out with Shaun Evens, but the world-building or universe-building in this series is fascinating stuff.

The 2nd book in the Inkeeper series was an incredibly fun journey, but I didn't expect it to also be an emotional one. The Andrews couple are exceptionally good at writing exciting and badass heroines, with movie-like action scenes and retorts, but, as it turns out, they can also write gut-wrenching interactions and poignant descriptions of war.

I absolutely loved reading this book; the writing keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next, but at the same time it somehow gives off a lovely cozy and warm feeling. I love books that make me want to know more about the plot, without making be feel stressed. This story feels safe but entertaining.

Sweep in Peace (Innkeeper Chronicles #2) by Ilona Andrews is such a fun sequel. I love how it blends both fantasy elements with sci-fi and it has a good sense of humor which I really appreciated. I'm very glad I decided to continue this series on GraphicAudio audiobook because the production is absolutely outstanding. I hope to continue it in the same format.

Narrated by Nora Achrati & a full cast* – see below

Sweep in Peace is the second book in the Innkeeper Chronicles which tell the story of the adventures of Dina Demille, an “innkeeper” in a universe where inns are kind-of magic B&Bs which host all manner of creatures and beings from across the universe. While I think it’s possible that someone could start the series here, I think the book works much better with the background of the previous book, Clean Sweep. There’s a lot of worldbuilding in book 1 which is only briefly recapped in Sweep in Peace.

In book 1 we got the beginnings of a romance between Dina and Sean Evans, a wolf shifter and former military man, who work together to stop an assassin. Sean, while present in critical ways in this story, is not strongly featured and for the most part, the romance doesn’t really advance here. The Innkeeper Chronicles are fantasy books though, not romance, so I didn’t expect that the relationship would be a major focus. (I gather that there is romantic progress in future books but it would be a stretch to think of the series as romance.)

Sweep in Peace introduces some new characters, most notably George Camarine, an arbitrator whose job is to settle intergalactic disputes. He asks Dina to host peace talks at Gertrude Hunt (her inn) to try and end a war which has raged for 10 years on the planet Nexus. The combatants are the Holy Cosmic Anocracy (vampires), the Merchants of Nexus (led by Nuan Cee (a bipedal fox-like creature) and the Otrakars (aka the Hope-Crushing Horde) – the “scourge of the galaxy” who are genetically engineered humans. It’s extremely dangerous for Dina to host the arbitration but it’s also very lucrative – both financially and magically. Gertrude Hunt renews itself and grows by utilising some of the magic of its guests. Too few guests and the inn dies. With the money a successful arbitration could bring, Dina will be able to survive for months and do some remodelling as well. In the end, she really has no choice; there are not enough (or any, really) guests banging on her door.

Most of the action is confined to the inn’s grounds as the arbitration progresses, with key insights offered by Caldenia (she’s so interesting!). The plot takes that sense of closeness and uses it to ramp up the tension.

There’s some light relief with the addition of Orro, a temperamental Quillonian chef with (Quillonian because of his porcupine-like quills) as well.

Even though Dina is not responsible for wrangling the parties to a peace agreement, she’s in the thick of things and her magic is pivotal to the eventual outcome.

There were some surprises I didn’t see coming but which made the story that much more enjoyable.

I admit I got just a teensy bit lost toward the end but generally I was engrossed and entertained all the way through.

The narration, again, is fantastic. Like with Clean Sweep, I occasionally found some of the music a bit intrusive but the cast performances were all extremely good. The full cast production by Graphic Audio is high quality and it’s clear that everyone involved paid attention – both to characterisation and pronunciation and to the story itself.

I like all kinds of audiobooks but there is something really special about this format – it’s like a radio play with sound effects and a different actor for each role.

Nora Achrati does most of the heavy lifting here given she’s the point-of-view character, but notable mentions must also go to Jon Vertullo as George and Scott McCormick as Orro. I don’t know exactly who voiced the Khanum (leader of the Otrakar delegation) but I was very impressed by her as well. There was not one performer who phoned it in though – all of them were excellent.

Having started the series by listening to the Graphic Audio versions, I can’t see myself choosing any other format for the rest of it.

Full Cast: Nora Achrati as Dina Demille, Jonathan Lee Taylor as Klaus Demille, Jon Vertullo as George Camarine, Christopher Walker as Nuan Cee, and Scott McCormick as Orro. With Karen Novack, Alex Hill-Knight, Jenna Sharpe, Stewart Crank, Lily Beacon, Kay Eluvian, James Lewis, Gabriel Michael, Shanta Parasuraman, John Kielty, Ken Jackson, Alejandro Ruiz, Ryan H. This Chick Read- Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews
Sweep in Peace is the second book in the Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews and the synopsis below is from the website Ilona-Andrews.com.

Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn is a living entity that defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina’s door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn… and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it’s all in the day’s work for an Innkeeper…
Ilona Andrews has once again created a world that I would be happy inhabiting, and the main character, Dina, a lady I would like to be. Why do I want to be Dina? Unlike most of us, she knew the purpose of her life at a pretty early age, as an Innkeeper she has the ability to use magic to shape her inn to fit her guests needs, and it doesn’t hurt that she has a couple of very good looking men interested in her romantically. I guess what appeals to me most is her strength of character. Even though, as the story unfolds, she is backed into a corner, she does what needs to be done, and doesn’t bitch about it. Her choices are always for the greater good, and unselfish. Because of her unselfishness, the reader roots for her to succeed, and when she does, our feelings for her aren’t tarnished by our own lack of character. I would’ve probably taken the easier road, so I’m even happier when her burden is lightened by success.

There is a sub storyline continued from the first novel regarding her parents disappearance. I had thought Andrews would have moved that plot forward a bit more, and was disappointed that they didn’t give us even one more clue. I’ll have to wait to see if the third novel concludes that storyline.

If you are looking for your next novel, check out Clean Sweep first on Overdrive, or buy it on your Nook or Kindle. Then move immediately to Sweep in Peace. This reader highly recommends both!

Series: Innkeeper Chronicles #2
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Dina DeMille doesn’t run the typical bed and breakfast. Her inn defies physics, her dog is a monster, and the inn needs guests to survive. When an Arbitrator shows up asking to host a peace summit between three warring species in her inn she accepts. Now she must keep the peace between three angry species, remodel the inn, find a chef, and deal with a determined police officer.

This book takes place about 7 months after the first book. I really enjoyed this nonstop adventure for Gertrude Hunt and Dina. A lot happens in this book. We get to meet a new species, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and we get to learn more about the merchants of Baha-char and the vampires. I found the different cultures and practices between these three species fascinating. Dina handled them all like a pro and it was enjoyable watching her put them in their place when they got out of line.

This was a great sequel to the first book and I can’t wait to learn more about this world and the Innkeepers. I know I can always count on Ilona Andrews to write amazing worlds and characters that I never want to stop reading about. Also, I have read this book a couple of times now and I just realized that George Caramine, the arbitrator, is the same George from the Edge series!!

Ilona Andrews is always a good read and Sweep in Peace does not disappoint.

Sweep in Peace: the second book in the Innkeeper Chronicles continues several months after book 1. The is approached by the Arbiters to facilitate a peace-conference in her inn. Problem is that non of the three warring parties are particularly willing to give up their stake in the game.

Like most if Andrew's work this is a fine example of likable characters, a bit of romance and a plot that involves both action and intrige. Diana remains a cool protagonist as both a vulnerable human among predators, but also an Innkeeper and the most powerful character at her hometurf. I loved the plot and the various character interactions... oh and George you are a bastard!!!!

Fans of Ilona Andrews know what to expect. Everyone els can expect a well written Urban Fantasy with a cool concept!

The Graphic Audio adaptations are *chef's kiss*. Just AMAZING. 5 full stars for the quality of the audiobook.

I was reminded when I listened to this book that (a) I LOVE the innkeeper stories and (b) this was my least favorite of them all. But that's still a very high bar and I still enjoyed it very much. The four stars are relative to the other Innkeeper books, frankly, and in comparison to other series or titles this may well rank higher. But you can only compare apples with apples, so, in comparison to "other apples" (aka, other Innkeeper books, or even other IA books) this is a solid 4 star.

I was so invested in this book, I sat in one place while listening to it for hours!
The second half of the book was so emotional, it bought tears to my eyes.
I continue to be awed by Dina’s bravery, intelligence and kindness.
While some parts felt dragged out just a bit, they were very informative about how everything works in this fictional world.
I loved the way the book ended, showing a glimpse of a hopeful future but also with some suspense as to whether it will be peaceful or not.

I knew, somehow, as soon as this mysterious stranger appeared in the story, that it was Sean. I can’t explain it but I just knew it! And I was right!

I've both read and listened to this series. Book 2 is even better than book 1. I am so in love with these characters and this world. It's like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket mixed with fantasy and scifi and romance. Dina is back and her task is just as challenging if not more so than in book 1. We had a lot of world building in book 1 so the authors really built on that in this book. We meet new faces and old ones. We get to see more about what makes Dina, Dina. The narration is spot on as always.

Can't stop listening!

I think that being unable (well, unwilling, because real life, you know) to stop reading a book (or, in this case, listening to the Graphic Audio version of the book) is a sign of how darn good it is.

And this one is! Dina DeMille is such a badass, something that wouldn't be visible if you are not privy to the inn's events, of course. And this time, Dina doesn't disappoint. I wonder what she'll name grey cat...

It really was a terrific story, full of twists and turns, great characters, and a lot of lessons that we can learn about life.

Another must!

This book provided so much depth and trauma to the characters. The peace summit being held at the Inn allowed for new and already introduced characters to come together with a backdrop of mystery and purpose.

I love the new chef and that she adopted a cat. There were parts of this story that made me so emotional and just tugged at the tender parts of my soul.

The graphic audio brought a new layer to the story, and I absolutely loved it.

June 2025: My second read of Sweep in Peace This time I read the Graphic audio version.

I just loved this! When I was only 1% in I was already so excited and happy. It does really help to have just read the Edge series and now to see George, Jack, Gaston and Sophie here. I didn't remember how much George manipulated and worked Dina. He was a bit careless of her feelings to bring about the needed results. I wonder if he will mention Klaus to her, or if Klaus has been there 20 years?

Dina certainly grew and worked hard and showed her incredible skills and vast knowledge. She's building her circle of found family. I LOVE Orro. Caldenia is interesting and seems to be mostly helping Dina. Last time, I was all Team Arland but it seems clear Sean will be with her here.

I really love the humor infused into this story. It would be pretty grim otherwise. The stakes are life and death, yet Dina makes it seem easier. Officer Marais will certainly enjoy his fuel efficient vehicle.

My December 2015 review at The Book Nympho (although I read it in May 2014):

Ilona Andrews never disappoints. I reread Clean Sweep and then went right into reading this. This serial is also published free on the author’s website over time. After complete, they remove it and publish it. As much as I LOVE their stories, I can’t seem to read it as a serial. Probably because the waiting would kill me. Somehow it’s easier to wait until it’s complete. That makes no sense, especially since I came back to avid reading through fanfiction. (I did start reading fanfiction in installments, but then switched over to only reading completed stories. I mean – some people didn’t finish their stories. I HATE that.)

Clean Sweep was funnier and more romantic, although the romance is very little here. And of course, I love Arland. Dina seems to prefer Sean. Of course, he lives next door and should be more available. Or is it because he is a shifter rather than a vampire? Is that why I am attached to Arland?

Sweep in Peace is darker. There is more world building and learning of new species and planets. Old favorites are prominent like Her Grace, Beast, Sean, Arland, Nuan Cee, and Officer Marais. And Jack, George, and Lark!!!! And new characters are developed like Kharnum and Orro. And I love all these people. Her Grace is delightful.

The illustrations in both ebooks are amazing too. Most times there is nothing but the cover. I appreciate the extra graphics. Highly recommended.

Giggle worthy quote:

Orro’s list burned through five hundred dollars’ worth of groceries and forty-five minutes of my time. I probably could’ve gotten at least some of it cheaper and faster at Costco, but last time I went there, I was attacked by some alien monsters. Unfortunately, a woman saw me and even helped me. When she went to report it, I hid the evidence and it took all my power to do it. I escaped before she came back with a manager, but it probably made her look like a crazy person. I had no wish to run into her, so I only went to Costco during dinner hours. I’d met her in the morning, and she seemed like she might have a family, so I thought dinnertime would be least likely for her to be out."
