Sin: Envy -- Sin bingo -- green cover, MPG YA, Beth read this year
Animals: Bear, Deer, Fox
DQ Day 5 Chapter 20 to the end
20- Early in chapter 29, Hetty thinks to herself, “For a year and a half we’ve been as safe as we could ask for. The fence, regular supplies. Welch and the Headmistress to hold us together. A year and a half, and in a week I’ve torn it apart.” Do you agree? Do you think the events at the end are Hetty’s fault? I don't. I'm not convinced she didn't lock the gate -- at this point it feels very possible that the Headmistress deliberately let it open. And its not her fault the gun girls fell asleep. I think that many girls in that situation was going to explode at some point anyway.
21- The chaos of chapter 20 is nuts. A bear, poison, evil people who think they have a better right to life than the others. The thing I found most disturbing in this part was that the extra girls, the remaining girls, the ones we know almost nothing about, seemed truly extra to the story. I felt nothing for them, and that bothered me. How did you all feel about this chaotic part of the book; the taking of Reese, the poison room, etc.? I felt a little like the book went off the rails. There was soooo much going on, and it seemed most of it didn't need to. I still am not sure if the poisoning was happening all along or if that was just a back up to gassing everyone in the room. I did find myself thinking of the other girls, and somewhat shocked that Reese and Hettie didn't really seem to care.
22- The reveal of the cause of the Tox, (view spoiler) was a good story point, I thought. Would you have liked to get more info on this? Did you have any inkling that this was the cause, or what did you think it was? Do you think that the CDC (or whoever found this stuff) released it on the island, or was it found there in the girls? I'm a little fuzzy about whether the tox or the school was there first. I'm sure the CDC set it up either way to study what would happen. I was figuring straight out toxin/virus so no, I didn't have an inkling to what it really was.
23- What happens next? Do they reach the mainland? Does Byatt recover, or is her essence gone? Why? Will there be a sequel, and will you read it if there is? I'm pretty sure Byatt as we knew her is gone. I was dissatisfied with the sci fi aspect of this book, the lack of explanation given for pretty much everything, and the weird characterization, but was satisfied with the ending, so I don't think I would read a second book.
DQ Day 4 Chapters 14-19
16. I felt so bad for Reese to be able to see her father again and so different. Mr. Harker changed in ways none of the girls have. Why do you think the Tox is more aggressive with men? Is it just hormones or something else? Was Reese’s reaction to Hetty killing her father a normal reaction? Do you think Reese has lost hope now? It seems to be doing strange things to every living thing and none of it consistent -- other than icky. I think that Reese's reaction was to be expected, and to be honest I was getting a little annoyed with Hettie for not understanding her reaction. Reese is pretty tough, so I don't think she'll lose hope completely, but she may wall herself back up pretty well.
17. Byatt’s section was pretty intense. This is the first time that we see the Tox attacking someone and how horrific it is. By the end she seems pretty resigned and ready to die when Paretta tells her that they are evacuating and there will be no more help for Roxton. Do you think Byatt understood that she was condemned everyone to death by breaking quarantine? The writing threw me off in this section. I'm not really sure she knew when she did it, and I'm not really sure she would have changed it even if she did know what the results would be.
18. Welch and the Headmistress are really upset about quarantine being broken. Do you believe they know who did it? What do you think about Welch telling the truth to the Boat Shift girls on the dock before she kills herself? Do they believe her or are just to overwhelm to really process everything? I think they are going to be in a certain amount of denial for a while, but the fact that there was no food dropped off gives a certain amount of weight to Welch's claims.
19. Hetty was right when she said Welch held everything and everyone together (paraphrasing). The first night she is gone things start to fall apart. Hetty not locking the gate when they got back. Gun Shift girls falling asleep on duty. Both reasons caused Lindsey to die. Do you think Hetty will step up to lead to the girls to make sure things do not dissolve any further into chaos or let her guilt of not locking the gate overwhelm her? I think she'll step up, but I think Reese is more likely to be the one that takes charge for some reason.

Beth wrote: "I am realizing looking at that list that I really don't read a lot of books with animals in them, so hopefully I can find at least one or two. Even if its just cat and dog"There are a lot of animals on that list that I've never even heard of! We can still count your books for sins. :)

Strategy so far:
1. If you have a Sin Bingo -- use it for those points
2. If you have a NEW animal -- we will use it for those points
3. When you post a completion post, please list any/all animals you find along with any sin qualifications. Then we can move them around as we get to the end of the week to maximize points/collections for the week.
4. If you have any books you were planning to read that you know has animals -- especially really odd ones -- read them this week. :)
Let us know if you have any questions or if you have any strategy ideas.
Mini Challenge Starts Tomorrow!Your team is on an animal scavenger hunt!
Find as many animals as you can either on the cover, in the title or in the text of the books you are reading. The reference to the animal within the text of the book needs to be to the actual animal and not an expression such as "lazy like a sloth", for example.
◈ Only books finished between 21th and 28th October will count for the Sloth mini challenge (i.e. books finished in week 3).
◈ Books will either count towards the main part of the challenge (the Seven Deadly Sins) or towards this mini challenge.
◈ One animal per book. (In other words: a book can only be used once for either cover, title or text.)
◈ The same animal can only be found up to a maximum of 7 times.
◈ You will gain 7 points for the first time you find a tricky animal, and 5 points for the first time you find an easy animal.
◈You will gain 1 point for each subsequent find of the same animal (easy or tricky), to a maximum of 7 finds of that animal.
i.e. if you find sloth (an easy animal) 7 times, in 7 different books you will gain 5 + 6*1 points
You can create collections of 7 unique animals (tricky or easy, you can't mix & match)
◈ for each collection of 7 unique easy animals found you will get 10 bonus points
◈ for each collection of 7 tricky animals found you will get 20 bonus points
◈ multiple collections are possible, but there can be no overlap (i.e. if you claim two collections of easy animals you can't have the same animal in each collection)
The list of animals is looooong -- so check
this link or the spreadsheet for all of them and their classification.

Victoria, sorry, I wasn't familiar with those daemons. Yep, whatever animal they appear as would work.
