35559 Spell-it-out rules (source)

Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.
If you are reading a translated version, you can also use the first letter of the translator's first or last name.

As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

35559 23rd of July : An Unmerited Blessing - Jubokko (p. 80-154)

5. Regarding the description of Okami’s powers, it's a bit cryptic imo. The author mentions he blurs/vibrates. Any speculation about Okami’s powers? Also what do you think about the Black Clan’s reaction after Mariko saved Ranmaru (they drugged and kidnapped her)?

I believe that Okami's power is some kind of magic, don't know.
I was pretty angry when they kidnapped her, she helped Ranmaru and that's how they pay her!?
But then Ren said she was a new recruit and I was like... aaah now I understand

6. A love interest(s) showed up in these last couple of chapters? Do you think there will be a love triangle?

I started thinking that there would be a love interest, but I'm not sure if it'll be Okami or Ranmaru. There isn't much clarity in here

7. When the ashigaru (foot soldiers) are singing about home, Kenshin kicks the boy who started the song in the face. Did you think it was unexpected? What does it say about Kenshin’s character so far?

I empathized with Kenshin in that moment, the soldiers haven't showed much simpathy about his missing sister. I was expecting for him to punish them, but also, I noted that he wasn't completely comfortable doing that.

8. At one point Mariko and Okami are having a conversation about their names/nicknames. Why that mysterious name Okami (= Wolf)? Is he hiding something? Or maybe he’s a shapeshifter?

I don't think he's a shapeshifter, but I'd like to know why he has his nickname.

9. Any thoughts about Ranmaru’s childhood friends’ story at the Jubokko tree? What are Ranmaru’s and Okami’s role in this story? (Btw that tree was creepy)

That tree reminded me of the labirynth in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Ranmaru must be they boy at the beginning of the book, and Okami the son of the guy who killed Ranmaru's father. The story helped to understand much more about the book

10. How are you liking it so far?
I'm liking it, but I still need more action, some chapters are kind of lame
35559 Comments and Questions
22 July The Beginning - Fall Forward to Keep Moving

1. Have you read any other books by Renee Ahdieh? If so, is there one you would recommend?

No I haven't, this is my first Renee Ahdieh book and I'm intrigued.

2. This whole section seems to be the synopsis in one! What do you think of Mariko's character? Do you agree with her reasoning to pretend to be a boy and find out the truth?
I believe Mariko is some kind of a boy girl, I mean, she wants to do things that are not proper to her gender, and I like how she tries to be brave, but also she's real, because she's not fearless, and I found that relatable.
I agree with her pretending to be a boy, if she remained as a girl while she's looking for the truth she'd be probably discovered quickly.

3. While on her way to Helan Castle, Mariko muses
"She should care that she was being exchanged like property in order to curry favour. But Mariko did not.
Not anymore."
What do you think of the last sentence? Did she have a falling out with her father before she left?

Maybe she had a previous experience when she felt lake that, but I believe that's part of her life, maybe not a relevant fact, maybe she's just tired of being just a pretty girl with no more options(?).

4. Do you think the boy in the prologue (who watches his father die) is Ranmaru? Or perhaps the boy is "the lazy comrade...fast asleep on the bench" in the Black Clan?
I was thinking all the way that Ranmaru was the boy, but now that you say so... maybe it's the other boy... don't know what to think hahaha

35559 Hello, there's another way of earning points, and it's participating in:
Read & Review Corner - Aka read the Book and post a small review on the thread:

Ink and Bone --> 10 points
Paper and Fire --> 20 points
Ash and Quill --> 30 points.

Review doesn't have to be too detailed, a small one counts as long as it's more than "great book" . Since we're cross promoting the author, if you also review the books on goodreads, It would be awesome.

Oh, just a side note, books need to be read from July 1st to count

So, if any of you read any of these books, post in the thread and let us know here =)!
