3113 Science doesn't suck! Oh Oh My head hurts now. Science is the sweet sweat of nerdom. Embrace it and it will take care of you. Scorn it, and the world will collapse in on itself. Repent good sir.

3113 That seems like a lot of wrong... I don't think I have seen so much wrong in any of your posts before. In the spirit of this thread I will say I disagree with you often but acknowledge your perspective as legitimate. I think the divide enters the arena because people value certain things more then others. From one persons perspective/belief human life is more important then anything, to the next person the actions of that person controls how important their life is. (Just as a universal example)

I use this example because I think it is the root cause of many hot topic discussions: Iraq (war), Oil (the environment and the possible destruction of the planet/human life), Pro-choice/pro-life.

But as a catalyst to progress I think we need to demand Congress does its job… What we need is a return to the power of the people, a vote of no confidence. Take our current congress. A few minority people are refusing to allow a vote (offshore drilling) because they “Nancy Pelosi” ARE saving the world. The vote is being blocked because there is overwhelming support for it on both sides of the aisle. Is it the place of 3 elected officials to deny the American people their will? Isn’t it the role of congress to act as OUR representatives? I think we need a vote of no confidence written into law. Maybe if we have the ability to remove their coveted seats they will actually repesent the people who elected them.

3113 You might want to try "Black Bodies and Quantum Cats: Tales from the Annals of Physics" Rusty it is really a light read. I believe you would understand it, even if you never has a science class in your life... well that might be pushing it, but it is really easy to follow.

3113 I don't really care for pretentious writers. Pull the uppity stick out yer ass and just write.

3113 Perhaps we could just have the un-edited version on Pay-perview. Everyone deserves to see this kind of programming.

Donna, as always you make solid points. Do you ever grow tired of being right... don't you want to be wrong just once to see how it feels?

3113 :D I think I like where your taking this RA. Now the only question is network tv or pay-perview?

3113 What’s on your real reading list this month? If you’re like me you have a massive "dream" to read list here on good reads that you never seem to get to. I'm working on changing this and slowly but surly correcting bookshelves.

At any rate, I'm currently reading "Black Bodies and Quantum Cats: Tales from the Annals of Physics" It is basically a history if Physics kicking off with Leonardo. It is an interesting and light read. I suggest it for anyone that wants to know just how physics affects or every day lives.

3113 I don't think it would happen. We argue and disagree almost all the time, but if we talk to each other I think most of us find common ground.

3113 I think he is blowing something’s out of proportion, but there is some truth in there. Just distorted truth, I'm sure he would gain some traction if he toned down the rhetoric.

I think the people you associate with do reflex your own character. Let’s face it Obama keeps bad company. He is also pretty fickle. And he is deceitful in his rhetoric about lowering taxes on the middle class. To me Middle class is a vague term so I checked into what middle class means to Obama. Folks if you earn more the 100,000 a year, I’d move to Australia soon. If all of his purposed taxes go into effect 100k club can be looking down the barrel of up to 60% taxes. This bothers me most because I just squeak over 100k. If his tax plan goes into effect, I will quit my job and work at wal-mart. Pretty much making the same amount. Of course this would also land me in the same group of foreclosed homes.

Mr.Obama can you please assist me in becoming a statistic… please!

3113 YEY! I'm human... Eh... what do I do now.

3113 I just participate. I didn’t set the wheels in motion. But I do believe in it and I hope to make a good impact on the lives we are trying to help.

Mensch, is that a good guy? I think that’s what it means... either that or a penis in Hebrew.

3113 Rusty, it isn't really a program yet. A friend of a friends wife is a "**key wife" on Fort Wayne Wright. She was talking to our friend about a certain unit that sustained heavy casualties, many of which were young fathers. These families are hurting pretty bad. Young single mothers trying to provide a stable life for their children is difficult anywhere under any circumstance.

To add in a violent death and grieving at the same time pretty much shuts the family unit down. Many of these women usually run to the arms of some low life. Not because they are a good men, but because they are available. (For good reason too)
So A few of us got together and volunteered to help them out with money, employment, daycare, and mentors for the children. We gain a few people all the time, the last I herd the Key Wives are trying to get status with the military as a recognized organization, so they can get funding. Right now all they have is whatever we (the volunteers) give.

Mark, Geoff, and Karen are the three that I spend the most time with, their father was killed last year in Iraq. They are siblings and their mother is still an emotional wreck. So I take the kids. Do "dad" things with them and my wife goes out with the mom. If they ever get it off the ground I'll let you know.

We also help out with fishermen and hotshots (wildfire firefighters) families.

3113 Let me flesh out how I help children:

In Alaska we have a pretty small population (who knew?) there are a lot of broken homes here, abusive parents and what not. There are also a lot of military families that are trying to cope with absent/deployed/dead fathers. Basically what I and a few others do is invite these kids to our homes or camping trips whatever and try to be a male figure for them. Teach those things that their fathers would teach them. Talk to them about “things” that they don’t feel comfortable talking to their mothers about. (I was surprised how much little boys don’t want to talk to their mothers about certain issues) We have had pretty good success and I think we are actually getting some women to join our ranks too. Woot! Mostly I build things with them. Teaching the patience of becoming a master craftsmen. I haven’t gone on any “trips” but that is mainly due to my work schedule. I already spend to much time away from home.

Rusty, I think I will let them take extra trebuchets home with them. The really small ones.

3113 Take that back, no heart here lady!
Jul 29, 2008 08:26AM

3113 I just wish they would leave me alone after I help them... nothing worse then some snot nosed kid being all thankful and happy after we build something. Aggh! Dude go play in a mud puddle somewhere.
Jul 29, 2008 08:24AM

3113 I like to take a more active role in the department of child protection. I know this may come to a shock to many, But kids are usually alright until adults screw them up. So I usually take a pretty aggressive action in response to child abuse. "Oh but nick your so mean to those kids in that "other" group" Yeah, because their already damaged. The only thing to save them is years of therapy.

3113 RA, I can see your point. My thing with Tibet is… What are they hoping to accomplish? China doesn’t respond to its own citizens, but they will respond to a couple of American kids? International governments have been pestering China about this for a long time, but some pot smoking hippy is going to change communist Chinas mind. Right. I would like to see a lot more people take part in fixing things here at home.
