29443 I tend to enjoy those that have a humor element or suspense elements.
29443 Yes, one of the reasons I got tired of the Stephanie Plum series. More chicklit. Not romance at all. Also the In Death series. I do think they were more romantic but the story just keeps going on and on and on. I try to avoid that type but I got curious. Don't mind connecting characters, though.
29443 Yeah, I got to have my HEA, too. Unfortunately, I usually don't know about that until the end of the book. But it'll teach me not to read that particular author again. I'm not real fond of books that carry the story on through several books. I want the issues revolved in one.

29443 Going to see Brave tonight ☺

It's Tuesday so free popcorn and drink. WOOHOO!!!
29443 Oh and books that bore me to death. A real dealbreaker.

29443 Sunny, love Maya Banks KGI series a bunch but I didn't include it here cause I was trying to think of books that had a lighter RS element to them.
29443 Not enough romance. TSTL heroines. Inapproriate sex scenes. All are painful to read but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

Plots that don't make any sense and are totally ridiculous. Just pure bad writing is the one thing that really kills a book for me.
29443 I like the "rakes" who aren't always what they seem. Like the ones who are really spies and use their debauched lifestyle as a cover.

Diseases (STDs) were a big problem back in those days so the idea of a true rake isn't too pretty.

I think celibate/virgin heroes can definitely be attractive. I got a few faves in that category.

29443 Yeah, Lady D, that cracks me up. They are near death but can still do the deed? Come on, give me a break!

29443 Jill Shalvis, Lori Foster, Rachel Gibson, Erin McCarthy, Linda Winfree, Lisa Kleypas, Lauren Dane

There are other authors with contemporary romance novels that have a lighter romantic suspense element going in them that I'm not sure will qualify but I'll list a few anyway... Marianne Stillings, Linda Howard, Arianna Hart, Judith Rochelle, Becky Barker

29443 Yeah, I have a problem with inappropriate love scenes. Like when something like the hero's truck blows up and the couple proceed to jump each other like crazy. Or they are on the run and out in the elements and the bad guys just passed by and they go for it.
29443 I like a variety. It would probably be easier to say what I don't like. A lot depends on my mood, too. Sometimes I want that light, witty regency and other times I want something heavier. Something dark but not too dark.

I like rakes but sometimes I get tired of the same ole, same ole. I still prefer the virgin heroine but it won't ruin the story if she's not. One of my faves is the stodgy proper bachelor and the young carefree spirit. Like the Sabrina storyline or It Happened One Autumn. Love medieval period romance. And there's something about a good ole western....

edited to add...

also love
The beauty and the beast
Ugly duckling to a swan/Pygmalion
Cinderella
Other fairy tale retellings
Tortured/scarred hero
Spinster/Wallflower
Gunslinger/lawman in the west
Loner/hermit forced to share his home with heroine
Medieval
Western
Georgian/Regency
Victorian

29443 I hope to see Brave tonight. My little town has one movie theater and only one movie a week. This week is Brave. Last week was Brave too but I was out of town ☺

29443 I, too, love a military man. I also love men who are in law enforcement. Police, FBI, DEA, CIA, etc... And Firemen! Sigh! And then, there is the cowboy! Another deep sigh!

I can get into a good police procedual but some can get too bogged down into the crime that the romance suffers. I prefer a good balance between the romance and suspense and a bit of witty banter or humor of some sort to lighten the situation is good. As long as its in good taste. Making light of a dead body or gruesome situation can be a turn off.

Love the I-Team and several of Linda Howard's books (Dream Man, Mr Perfect, Open Season, Cry No More, etc), Jaycee Clark's Deadly series, Marliss Melton's Seal Team 12, etc...

29443 Kind of a hard one since so many authors write some TSTL and whiney type heroines. But love most or at least some of Pamela Clare, Julie Garwood, Maggie Osborne, Julie James, Julia Quinn, Elizabeth Hoyt, Jill Shalvis, Lori Foster, Lisa Kleypas, Jaycee Clark, Linda Winfree, Lisa Marie Rice, Linda Howard, Kate Noble, to name a few ☺
