This is the group read for February. I read this long ago, but it did not stick with me. I know that this can be a sensitive subject, but I would hope that we can discuss this as adults and get a good discussion going about this book. Happy reading!
Did anyone read this as a child? I was wondering what a kid's perspective of this book would differ from an adult reader.
This is the group read for January. This is another book that I have never read and I'm really looking forward to it.
This is the group read for January. I have wanted to read a Henry James book for quite some time and hopefully, this one is a good representation of his writing. Enjoy the discussion and happy reading!
This is the children's group read for December. This should be perfect for the Christmas season. I can't wait to read the discussion on this book. Happy reading!
Hilary wrote: "Fine Lisa. As I said I may be over- committed, but I shall participate where possible! :)"Thanks Hilary! I think that we will stick with that schedule and when you can participate that would be awesome!
Do you think that public shaming of people works? Does it have the desired outcome? I have seen "shaming" of people's pets on Facebook and I just have to think "why"?
I must say that it seems to detract from the story. It did not make the story flow well. Plus, it was rather boring.
The group reads could beJanuary-Some Henry James novel
February-Uncle Tom's Cabin
March-Faust
April(perhaps May)-Paradise Lost
How does this sound? It would give everyone a holiday break and give some direction for the first part of the year. However, I don't want to feel like a little book club dictator(ha), so if this does not sound ok, please suggest changes!
There has been a nomination for December for the children's read. It is The Gift of the Magi, so I think that we could add Treasure Islandfor January.
These are my recommendations:Don Quixote
Paradise Lost
TThe Importance of Being Earnest
Moby-Dick; or, The Whale
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Treasure Island
Faust
These are just a few that caught my eye when I wandered around the Kindle store. I have read a couple years ago, but I would like to revisit them and the others just intimidate me to read them alone. If anyone else has ideas, please post them!
It is the initial section at the beginning of the book, that describes how the author found out about the story.
I also have a real desire to read some "classical" classics, like Chaucer, Homer and such. I would like to wander into that area, but they scare me to read solo. I would need lots of hand holding! :)
☯Emily wrote: "I have read Portrait of a Lady and Turn of the Screw and did not like either one of them. I certainly can't recommend Henry James."Is there something that you would like to read? I think that I'm done with the group-wide polls. I would rather post in this thread, where most of the people comment and read the books that are discussed. I like having 3-4 months of books already chosen.
I was wondering if people would like to read a Henry James novel for the next group read? I have never read anything by him. Any takers? If so, what book? I'm open to anything.
Jennifer wrote: "was pleasantly surprised to find I had a copy of this book already. I did not have to read it and never have however I'm wondering how important the introduction is to the story I'm having trouble..."I was wondering what everyone thought about the The Custom House section. Does it add to the story or does it detract?
