I think that it is easier to visualize an image which can be seen in nature. Most people have seen the smallest signs of spring in the tiny buds on flowers and feel happy knowing that winter is almost over. A volcano is a wonderful image for someone losing their head and then cooling off later. It is a tangible example which can stick with a reader, rather than a bunch of words that make people's eyes glaze over.

You summarized my thoughts exactly. It is never known by most people what their actions do to another. It made me cringe reading Silas's reaction to his betrayal when he finally figured out what William done.
I also loved the imagery of the weaver as an insect.

24794 Everyman, I really enjoyed your observations. What struck me as I was reading last night was how fluid the writing style seems. It just flows right off the page, yet, the story is not lost. It seems that the story does not get bogged down, which seems to occur with other classics. I wondered if Eliot was able to skip the whole "being payed by the word" example that many other writers did.

24794 What is the preachy part about? Is it like other children's novels that try to impart a lesson and morals or is it just the style in general?

I'm convinced that I need to read/reread many of the Greek myths. After googling, I read about Medea and she was an interesting character, but it does seem that most of her ills were about love, she was also very conniving about killing kings and such. Some of the times convincing other people to do the dirty deed instead of herself. Similar to Lady Macbeth, interesting!

It is a hard read, some of the phrases and words are so different. Thanks for keeping it up!

24794 I'm thinking that Banquo might not make it alive to the end. I can't remember ,but his one line in this act made me think that he is not going to make it. Hmmm.....

24794 I never thought about her as being determined. Interesting idea. She really is focused and ready to do anything to get her husband on the throne.

It is amazing how "reading" a book in a class can change how you feel about that book! Thus the reason for this group! I hope that you enjoy your reread of this one and can't wait to hear your thoughts.

24794 The setting for this play is very dark, and evil. Starting with the witches and then the dark and cloudy night in this act, I love how Shakespeare sets the scene.
