I love challenges and they are one of my favourite aspects of this group. I was looking forward to joining in with the new yearly challenges. If we were voting I would pick the last one in your list, Lauren. I haven't taken part in any team challenges so I don't want to comment on some thing I don't know. I would however join in if you had another one!

Based on the first 6 chapters, my initial thoughts are:
(view spoiler)[ Firstly, I need to keep rebinding myself how long ago this book was written. I want to ask them how insane they can be to produce so many people when the world is already struggling to meet the needs of its population, but of course the population was MUCH smaller then! I was also shocked that they would pietism such commercialism into people, again because I think in terms of sustainable resources, but then realised it was about promoting the economy! I'm not that surprised at how easy it seems to be to influence peoples choices etc. That is what advertising is all about anyway today. I don't watch TV, only movies and series, so I skip all those adverts, same with radio, yet I still face hoards of adverts constantly attempting to influence my choices, and I am sure they must work at least some of the time! (hide spoiler)]Basically, I am enjoying three read so far, but very glad I don't live in that society. Next 6 chapters coming up soon...

I'm in for The Passage, let me know when you getting close to the start date....

So basically, when we come up with the new yearly challenges which end in September we need to include some which have mini versions possible for those who read less books in the year!

Another variation could be that you have to do a certain number of challenges based on the number of books you intend to read in the year. So if you plan to read 50 or less books, you read 10 for the challenge, but if you plan to read 100 books you need to do 20 for the challenge. That way it evens the playing field a bit.

I refused to read LOTR for years. As a child, I was a major bookworm (some things never change) and my brother hardly read anything, except LOTR. At that point, I refused to read it simply because he had (I was young so it seemed a justifiable reason at the time!) I eventually read it before the movies came out. I enjoyed it but have not felt the desire to read it again!
I have however been reading Collapse by Jared Diamond for nearly 3 years now. I am not sure why it is taking me so long, as I am actually really enjoying it.
Glad I am not the only person who can take years to read a book and still not give up on it!

I live in the bush so tick bite fever is a constant threat. Luckily, I can catch it quickly because I am always on the lookout so I generally only have one or two days of feeling terrible. Much better today!
Glad you feeling better too!!

I read the first 6 chapters yesterday, but I will skip today so we can be equal again. Today is my last day of leave and I have loads to sort out as I spent the last two days in bed with Tick Bite Fever.

Thanks. Yeah, it looked like fun so I thought I would go for it.

Thanks.I did think of something relevant to nominate anyway, but it would still be helpful in the long run.

There are so many I want to nominate...
Pure or
Contact

swem - in recognition of the awesome athletes who won at last out first 2 good medals!

Could we have a list like this for Word of the month as well? I never nominate anything because I am not sure what words have been used, before the last few months.
