Sorry, I didn't get notification of your first post. Tonight is fine, 5 chapters a day...

finished
Un Lun Dun. It is one of my favourite books of the year! He is brilliant. So many clever little comments and twists and ideas. I want an Utterling...

Hey Lu, welcome back. Hope you had a great trip. Are we still on for reading this together? When do you want to start and how much do you want to read per day (I could probably finish the book in a day or two, so you choose the pace...)?

Emma, there are three more in that series, although one is set in modern times with a tomb discovered. I loved them all.

Emma, I can't comment on the Kindle Fire or the I-pad, but I got the Galaxy Tab (Android tablet). I chose a tablet over an e-reader as I wanted to be able to do more than just read books. I watch videos, play games, surf the internet, take notes in meetings, edit documents, identify stars and read! I chose Android over Apple as I believe Android is a much more flexible platform and you have more control over it. I have no regrets and love the choice I made

How's it going? I really enjoyed that novel, and my favourite character was The Book."I'm really enjoying it. About half way through so far. The Book is great, but I have to admit a certain fondness for Curdle. I thought the giraffe concept was Hysterical.
Definitely going to read more of his stuff.

I'm starting Un Lun Dun as a buddy read in another group.

Thoughts on Chapters 7-12:
(view spoiler)[I kept thinking about The Selfish Gene while I was reading this. It helped make sense how the society in the book works. The concept which was relevant was how the human race is monogamous because males help raise offspring (looking from a biological point, not a psychological or moral one). If he is going to invest energy into raising a child, he needs to know it is going to be continuing his genes. If you take away the offspring element, the main reason for monogamy is removed. That however does not explain why they actively discourage monogamy so much though... Maybe I will find that in the last 6 chapters, which I am going to read now. (hide spoiler)]

I'm waiting till you get back to read my book anyway, so I'm fine!
Enjoy the trip...

I haven't read Railsea yet, but I just thought I would add a comment that may be helpful... Littoral is one of the zones on a beach. It is that area between high and low water marks, some times called intertidal zone. Not sure how littoral-minded fits into the book our the world that it is set in, but thought that might be of use. I did my honors protect on beach ecology so recognised the word to be something not used regularly in normal conversation, outside of the beach babes, that is!!!
