I've read The Raven today (13 September) in preparation for next months BOTM. Will we be counting it ? My copy has only 6 pages ( 4 of which are the actual poem )"
count it!

I agree with April in that I think Holly's character is interesting and complicated mainly because Capote writes in a way that makes the reader inclined to sympathize when in reality she's taking advantage of everyone around her. I will always have issues with characters like Holly, or Holden from The Catcher in the Rye, because of the "woe is me" persona while they do absolutely nothing to contribute to society.
Also agree with Christine's comment - seems fitting that Wuthering Heights is Holly's favorite book. Another book full of characters that LITERALLY die from "woe is me" depression. I get technology and medicine of the day wasn't advanced, but it still boggles the mind how many people egotistically depressed themselves to death.
I'll have to rewatch the movie, I honestly forget most of it besides the scene where they steal masks, but I do remember "fred" and Holly getting together at the end somehow?
I do think there are some great lines by Capote that I appreciate. Some of them below. Other that that, so-so for me.
- "Maybe the older you grow the less easy it is to put thought into action., maybe that's why it gets all locked up in your head and becomes a burden. Whenever I read in the paper about an old man disgracing himself, I know it's because of this burden."
- "The average personality reshapes frequently, every few years even our bodies undergo a complete overhaul - desirable or not, it is a natural thing that we should change. Here were two people that would never change because they'd been given their character too soon; which, like sudden riches, leads to a lack of proportion: the one had splurged herself into a top-heavy realist, the other hopeless romantic."
- "It's a bore, but the answer is good things only happen to you if you're good. Good? Honest is more what I mean. Not law-type honest, but unto-thyself-type honest. Be anything but a coward, a pretender, an emotional crook, a whore: I'd rather have cancer than a dishonest heart. Which isn't being pious, just practical. Cancer may cool you, but the other's sure to."

As a reminder, books that qualify for this category must have a publication date 1970 and after. If the book you wish to nominate was published 1969 or prior, please make your suggestion on the Classics thread.
I'll start off by suggesting The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

Sounds like we have more support for options 1 and 3. So I'm thinking a few things....
a) Let's do a trial run of option 1. I'll open a discussion thread similar to other BOTM suggestion threads and we'll start a formal "bookshelf re-read" category. We can try it for a few months and see how it goes... if it's not working, we can switch things up.
b) For those in favor of option 2... trust me I'm in the same boat in that I've missed a bunch of group reads I can't seem to catch up on. Maybe we do a freebie month as a one-off in the future? Or maybe pick one category to do it as opposed to both at the same time? Also sometimes the group ends up reading books I've already read so I consider that a freebie month but maybe others feel differently...
c) For buddy reads, still taking ideas. How can we make this more formal? Maybe people can comment on a common thread letting others know they're revisiting a book club book outside of the monthly reads and ask others to join. We can set up a formal schedule somehow if 2+ people are reading the same book?
d) Keeping this discussion open to continue to hear your thoughts/ideas/reactions to trying option 1. Continue to let me know what you guys think!!!
