Hanging on To Max by Bechard
These are all ones where the teen boy takes responsibility for the baby, not necessarily having a great relationship with birth mother.

First Part Last by Angela Johnson
No More Saturday Nights by Mazer (?)

One Big Damn Puzzler by John Harding

You're welcome! Happy to help :)

Reefsong by Carol Severance?
Galax-Arena?
Kidnapped from an Australian train station, Joella, Peter, and Liane are taken on a rocket to the Galax-Arena, where children stolen from Earth perform death-defying stunts for the amusement of the inhabitants of the planet Vexak.

Throwing this out there:

- girl moves to Ocean City, Maryland. But it is more YA than MG.

Congratulations on finding your book, Melody! I've moved this thread to solved and will add the book to our bookshelves for you. :)

I concur with asking Lobstergirl to join us, and apologize for slacking off lately. This summer got really crazy w/ my hubs in the hospital and me traveling for work, but I'm catching up and have a bit more time for moderating now. :)
Cheryl - hope you feel better soon!

But I second the suggestion of Gift of Magic.

Corinne - Lois Duncan's books were reissued recently. Updated versions with cell phones and modern technology. Just FYI, in case that's the version your library has.

yep, I have a copy of High School Pusher and the MC's name is Zan, and there's the scene with the wallet. Very graphic and edgy, like all of Jack W Thomas' books.

That's funny. Audrey Rose was the second book that came to my mind, too. I feel like I read this book, whatever it is...

The Pigman by Paul Zindel?
My Sweet Audrina? It came out in '82 and doesn't match exactly, but pretty close and was the first thing that came to mind. And it was one of those books that EVERYONE was reading back then.

Was it some kind of alphabet book, perhaps? Kind of sounds that way, with the eel-egret-evil conversation.

Long shot, but maybe the Hamilton High series by
Marilyn Reynolds?

Sounds a little like
The Probable Future. I don't think the supernatural powers match up exactly to what you described, but it's about a family wherein all the women have different "gifts."

Maybe the Boyfriend Club series? It has a character named Roni and is about a group of HS friends.
#2 in the series is
Roni's Dream Boythe covers don't look particularly gritty, but I haven't read them, so idk.
