185 World's End by Jake Halpern. It's the sequel to Dormia. It's a good MG/YA fantasy, Ann, but it is on the thick side so for enthusiastic readers. I'll move the thread. :)
185 Jeannine, may we consider this "solved" then? I'll move the thread if so.
185 You're welcome!
185 Bonjour Marie!

Do you know if the book was by a French author? Did you read it in English or French, was it a translation? It sounds like it was a teen/YA book?
185 Pure Dead Magic for the link to Sue's suggestion
185 Not an exact match, but reminds me of the short story "Skin" by Roald Dahl.
185 Congrats on finding your book, Tammy! I'll move the thread to Solved for you.
185 Whatever Happened To Ruby? A Novel - Google book search picks up a character named Hester but I can't find much info about the plot.

Just this, from the author's obituary "In her second novel, Whatever Happened to Ruby? (1968), Wendy Owen turned to the dreadfulness of life at a girls' boarding school in Hampshire during the Second World War. The headmistress is a monster of hypocrisy, and incompetent with it. The staff are either unpleasant or bored, or both." The author is from the UK, so maybe?

ETA: just realized you said PRE-WWII not during, but I'll let the suggestion stand, just in case.

ETA2: Just FYI, (and for the sake of being thorough) this book was also published in the US with title The Education of Winnie D
185 Friends in Time - has a cook named Hester

185 Laurie Halse Anderson has said that her book Prom was written specifically to meet this request ("a book about normal teens") from her fans.

185 Duncan wrote: "This was seventeen years ago (closing weekend of the Atlanta Olympics) and we were in serious NRE (new relationship energy) and not thinking about the book /at all/."

No, I'm sure not. ;)
185 OMG! What a small world.

Y'know....if y'all had just stopped into the library while you were here in town and ASKED ME, we could have resolved this some time ago. :) But then it wouldn't make such a good story.
185 oh wow! That is the sweetest story EVER. I'm so tickled I could help y'all find it. You just made my Christmas. :)
185 Oh, and where did you find a copy of the cover art? I'd like to update the GR record.
185 YAY! ::happy dance::

So glad that was the one! I'll move the thread to Solved for you.

Also, y'all are ADORABLE. I think it's so awesome that Duncan was as invested in this search as Christine. Congrats and happy holidays to you both. :)
185 Haha, that review is more a reflection of how much I LOVED the book as a teen and how excited I was to finally find it again and how much fun it was to revisit the world it contains, than an objective evaluation of the book's quality. A Wild Thing has been on my TBR list for awhile, I need to find a copy!
