You're welcome! I tracked down a used copy on ebay several years ago and it's been fun to revisit it.
This is the The Burgess Bird Book for Children. I had it as a child and spent a long time trying to figure out the title as an adult!

I was going to suggest maybe one of Piers Anthony's Xanth books, if you haven't checked those yet.
Possibly The Night Tourist or its follow up The Twilight Prisoner. I think the latter one has more of a triangle situation going on.
