I don't know if YA is your thing or not, but I Wish You All the Best is about an NB teen coming out to their family, dealing with the consequences, and finding their way.

Rosa, I don’t recall what resource I was searching (maybe worldcat?) but I used pretty simple keywords like cave and monster, limited to adult fiction w/ 1960-1980 pub date, and the title jumped out from the list of results.
