185 Throwing this out there, even though it only hits a few of your marks: YA translation, boy on the run, yellow cover. You didn't mention time travel and I don't think he ends up in Venice, but:
The Book of Time
185 I’m glad you posted it, AJ! It may help other people in the future who come across this thread, as well.

I mentioned the OP just because we can’t resolve this thread officially until they confirm. Hopefully they’ll chime in.
185 The Girl In Between <--- link for A.J.'s suggestion

Although, the OP hasn't commented on this thread in 3 years.....
185 took some digging, but I found this: The Nature of the Beast - one user review describes grandfather's chickens being killed by the beast.

185 Random guess, since we don't know when it was read, but: CALIFORNIA NIGHT'S DREAM (CALIFORNIA DREAMS #8) has a band performing in a HS production of Midsummer Night's Dream.
185 The Witch Who Was Afraid of Witches <--- link for Emily's suggestion
185 Are the two stories related in any way, or just two totally separate stories?

How long ago did you read this?

185 There are lots of versions, but the illustrations you describe sound like they could be from this one: Hans Christian Andersen's The little mermaid
185 Is it possibly a family of rabbits? Mother Rabbit's Son Tom ?
185 Maybe something by Duncan Emrich?

The Whim-Wham Book or
The Hodgepodge Book

I loved both of these as a kid and I seem to recall "sardines" and "peas with honey" coming from one of them.
185 Glad you found it! Here's the link The Forgetting Time
185 Sounds like something by Melody Carlson.
185 The first thing that came to mind is Skulduggery Pleasant (also published under title Scepter of the Ancients )
185 whoops, sorry, I misread your post and thought you read it in 2007.
185 The Roanoke Girls -- link to Phylicia's suggestion
185 Under the Watsons' Porch, maybe. The main character is Ellie, but it's the summer, and he's a bad boy who steals a necklace for her birthday.
185 Thanks! Glad you found your book! Case closed. :)
185 How About No -- for the link.

Str45 - can you confirm that this was the one you were looking for so we can close the thread and shelve the title?
