185 Thanks for adding the link, Rosa! I'll move this to Solved.
185 What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum-Ucci (on mobile, can’t link)
185 Your description made me think of Eve but I don't remember all the details.
185 Hooray! I'll move this to solved for you.
185 Take a look at this cover of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler - it seems to match your abstract swirly colors description, and the MC has lost a chimpanzee "twin sister"
185 If it could have been published as late as '83, maybe The Hunger Scream
185 oh, one more: Alabaster Chambers -- though the protagonist is a bit older in this one, and married.
185 I read so many of those books in the early 80s. I don't remember details on any of these, but here are some I read during that time:

Goodbye, Paper Doll
Second Star to the Right
Early Disorder
185 Betsy Haynes did write the Bone Chillers series, but this was not one of them. Those were all released as paperbacks, this one was in hardcover. But if the title doesn't ring a bell it's probably not the one.
185 Utterly random guess, but: The Shadows of Jeremy Pimm. The male protag is 16. (Thief of Always was my first guess but I see you've ruled that one out!)
185 Possibly The Divide? First of a trilogy, has elves, and non-traditional names for magical creatures. (unicorns are "brittlehorns")
185 The Toll Bridge, maybe?
185 This is a YA book so I'm moving this thread to the appropriate folder.
185 You're welcome! The reviews for it are amazing, I think I'm going to track down a copy for myself as well.
185 and another I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn
185 another possibility Like No Other by Una LaMarche
