141034 I made a big gulping sound, and opened my mouth to speak, "Awww, that's cute! Can I pet it?" I took out my green hankercheif, and wiped my mouth, then, stuffing it back in my pocket, went over to Aura.

"Watch it!"

I had put out my hand to stroke it, and, just in time, whipped it back before the creature bit me.

"Ahh! It nearly bit me!" I said, staring at it in wonder, my fingers well away from it's razor sharp teeth.

141034 I finally sit up, yawning.

"Wass wit' all da...da...da yellin'?" I ask, rubbing my eyes.

A loud groan came from my left, and suddenly I was hoisted five feet in the air, dangling from my right foot.

"Ahhh! Oi, wass happenin'? Aaahhhhh is that you, Carla?" I scream, struggling to free myself from Carla's iron grip.

"Em, you aren't getting up, so I'm sorry, but-" The last thing I heard before I was hurtled twenty feet in the air was the sound of Aura reappearing and shrieking inaudible words to Carla. Then I was spinning crazily through the air, not stopping 'til I landed in a huge leaf pile. By then I was quite awake.

141034 But I had no choice, and I made my way through the piles of cardboard boxes, not bothering even to pick them up off the ground, just leaving them to lie, strewn everywhere, as I headed for the kitchen.

When I entered the room, I sat down at the table, and watched Mrs. Edderson lay out the chips on the pan. I was quite bored.

She seemed to notice me and without turning around said, "Well, honey, don't just sit there- make yourself useful, for goodness' sake!"

I looked up with a start, then sighed, and stood. "What can I do?"

"Oh, I'm so glad you asked - how about we clean up around this place, mm? Your father I'm sure would be so grateful! Why not pick up a few of the boxes strewn in the hallway. Some of them must be yours!"

I glared at her back. I had already put away almost all the boxes - and Dad probably wouldn't even notice. But still, if Dad learned I had 'misbehaved for out dear, sweet neighbor Mrs. Edderson', I'd get it. So, I trudged forlornly down the hall, glancing at boxes and their black ink labels. Finally, I saw one that had my name on it.

I bent down and studied the label. It read, Erin's old books. Well, what do ya know, I'd forgotten all about these. I pulled open the flap, and rummaged through it. Old, worn out books were piled and sorted neatly in rows along the bottom, spines faces upward. Grimms' Fairy Tales, Moby Dick, Pinocchio, and Lewis Carrol's Alice and Wonderland stood out first. I smiled as I took out Pinocchio. It had always scared me, but I still loved it. Dad would read it to me at night, and I'd usually get nightmares. He would always warn me about it, but I remembered urging and pleading for him to read at least a chapter until he gave in, laughing and tickling me, and hoisting me up on his shoulders. I was really little then.

But as I got older, I forgot about Pinocchio, and then began asking to read by myself, as I learned to read and wanted to practice.

"Erin, the nachos will be ready in a little while, do you need some help?" Mrs. Edderson's voice rang through the hall, bringing me out of my reverie.

I ignored her, and wrinkled my nose. Her voice had brought me to another memory. A much more recent one, when Dad and I had first arrived at the apartment. I remembered I was just unpacking another box of books, very similar to this one, when the doorbell had rung - a horrible doorway, nearly scared Dad's pants off - and Mrs. Edderson had called through the screen door.

"Yoo hoo! Hello! I believe I'm your new neighbor, welcome!"

At the sound of the high-pitched voice, Dad had stumbled for the door, and stuck out his hand.

"Oh! Hello, yes, we just arrived a few days ago - who might I thank for this pleasure?"

She had giggled a disgusting, girly giggle, which still made my insides twist. Dad wasn't all too impressed with her either, at first, I remembered he didn't like her at first, but she was great at turning over people to the dark side. We soon got used to her surprise visits, bringing cookies, brownies, or other sweets, until Dad had pretended enough, and gave in.

In my opinion, she wasn't the nice, sweet, kind Mrs. Edderson Dad knew, I had been babysat enough by her to recognize her ruse. Apparently, she had realized that her cover wasn't working on me, but nonetheless kept it up, until it got so annoying, I left the room whenever I could.

On that first visit, we learned all about Darmina Edderson, how she loved chocolate brownies, how she liked a lot of the same music as Dad, and how she, too, had lost a spouse. Dad had loved her after that. Poor, widowed, Mrs. Edderson, all alone, without any children like he had, not even a niece or nephew. Pshhh. Yeah right.

141034 (Hi, Lilliana! You did great! I LOVE the twist! :D :D :D)

I watched with distaste as most of the boys looked up, wide eyed, gaped their mouths open, or, in one case, fell over, off the benches.

"Ahem, hello boys."

A few giggled nervously, and one answered timidly, "H-hi."

Bailey flipped her long blonde hair with much skill, and walked back to the table, heels clicking loudly.

As soon as she sat down, the cafeteria gradually began to start up the chatter again, and soon it was filled with noise again.
