12350 I read the book, Kathy, and saw the movie. Loved them both!
12350 I am curious, where do you live, Jason? Wouldn't it be cool to get a group of people to meet there to do like a pilgrimage to the Poe House?? What a riot!!!! I'd love to go there before it all closes!

I live near St. Louis , Missouri.

12350 I know this is not Hemingway.....but I wanted to get the word out,and I am one of the moderators, so, what the hell. I made an executive decision to post this, like I said to get the word out. If anyone has any ideas, or cares to contact someone important about this issue, go for it, man! Or let me know some ideas to save this situation, and keep Poe where he is,and keep his house open in Baltimore. Ok, here goes.......

Ok, folks. The Poe house in Baltimore , Maryland will close June 2012
if they don't become "self sufficient", which was the term used.
Thousands of people come from all over the world ,and the United
States each year to tour his home/museum in Baltimore, and to visit his
grave shrine.

The city of Baltimore doesn't feel the home is worth their time, or
money. Getting the home on the National Registry of Historic sights ,
would bring in some Federal dollars, is what I understand, which could
help out.

As far as moving the body, he' s buried there, part of his history, is
his death in Baltimore, and his years living there. Why move him?
Couldn't that money be more well spent to preserve his grave, and the
home in Baltimore?? Seems so to me. Philadelphia is the place they
might move him once they exhume the body.

Google it,and do some research, and consider contacting "the powers
that be", to keep the Poe house open in Baltimore, and to keep his body
in his final resting place. I just thought people would like to know
what's going on.

Peace in Poe,

12350 I plan to watch THE KILLERS with Burt Lancaster, and Ava Gardner. It's on Turner Classic Movies , on Nov. 4th, 2010, 7 pm central time. I've heard it's an excellent adaptation of his short story. I've read that it was the only movie that Ernest truly liked. He thought all the others sucked. He said Lauren Bacall made TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT.

I love TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT tho with Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart, but after finally reading the book , in Key West, sitting by Ernest's house there, the movie is not much like the book, which may be the reason why it's a good movie, cause it's barely like his book??????

I thought FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS was a neat movie, but certainly not the best in the world. I had a friend give me a dvd of OLD MAN & THE SEA for my birthday, with Spencer Tracy. It's ok, the book is amazing. I love it so much. What makes the movie neat is Hemingway actually appears in the film. If you've not seen it, that makes it worth it. If you have seen it, Gary, do you know which scene Ernest appears in??? His wife , Mary , appears in the same scenes.

Of all the movies, I've seen, I really liked the old version of A FAREWELL TO ARMS with Gary Cooper, and Helen Hayes. After that movie was made Gary Cooper, and Ernest became fast friends, which is why Gary appears in FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS with Ingrid Bergman. I think anything Ingrid's in is amazing, and felt she made the movie watchable, even if it's not the best version.

I believe you are right, to a great extent, that maybe movies ruin the prose that Hemingway does in his novels, and stories. I've not seen other versions of his books in movies, but I can let you know my verdict on THE KILLERS after I've seen it. My son read the story in one of his literature classes, and they watched the movie, and he tells me the movie is good. I look forward to seeing it soon. I do think that if anyone can make a movie great it's Burt Lancaster, and Ava Gardner. Ava's supposedly swam naked in Ernest's pool in Cuba. Maybe someone should make a movie about that, or the about the man's life, and skip his books??

I wonder how this version of THE GARDEN OF EDEN will be?? It certainly looks sexy in the trailer! I thought it was a very sexy story in the book, and different then other Hemingway I've read. I was actually quite surprised after I read it.

12350 I have read this book numerous times, and love it, love it, love it.
Did it for my bookclub, and some members also hated it, but others loved it. Took me 7 years to get them to do another Hemingway novel. We did A FAREWELL TO ARMS,and it got more favorable reviews in the group, but still lots of criticisms. I just think Hemingway is amazing. Always have. Nothing changes my mind. You hit the nail on the head, Brent, so simple, yet so much to say between those lines of prose!

12350 He certainly could write, though.

This comment you just made, John, is exactly why I like him so much, and read him often. He certainly could write!!! I think he's awesome in that dept.

12350 I recommend both John Hemingway's Memoir/bio, STRANGE TRIBE and RUNNING WITH THE BULLS, Valerie Hemingway's also. Both very good! Maybe shows a softer side of Hemingway, John. God knows he was far from perfect, and could be quite mean, but sometimes I've wondered, you know , we all have our reasons for our behaviors, even if others don't understand what those reasons are. I've found I can kinda see why things were the way they were. Mental illiness seems to run in that family, it seems. Read the books. John's book is quite something , really. Made me see things in a new light. Valerie's too. She had some interesting comparisons, and contrasts to John's perspectives.

12350 Yeah, you need to investigate that, really!!!!!! Write a grant and apply, i mean, what the hell? What have you got to lose? You can talk to grant writing experts, because I've actually been involved in that, and they can be a big help, if you get a good consultant.

I think if you got a grant to write, study, and do travels concerning Hemingway, you'd do a bang up job! You might need an assistant..... wonder who that could be?? *Hint, Hint, sniff, sniff, looks around the room??*

12350 I'd love to hear some of those stories..... willing to share some???

12350 That would be way cool. Also have a suggestion of someone else to....A.E. Hotchner. You might want to move him up on your list to the top,and get to him soon.
He is quite elderly. I saw him in person a few years ago right in St. Louis, at the school where he grew up. He was quite the card, and really enjoyed hearing him speak.

12350 ok , folks, that should work. I finally went to the trouble to look it up. I sure hope you'll take a gander at Allie's blog. It's awesome!

12350 Allie Baker spends a lot of time doing this fantastic blog for all Hemingway fans. She has some top notch interviews with some prime experts on Hemingway. If you've not checked out her website, you really need to do so. Not only does she have plans to interview John Hemingway, who wrote Strange Tribe, she has some audios of Hadley being interviewed, and you get to hear her live telling about her relationship with Ernest. The live interviews are amazing, folks! I would really encourage you to check out Allie's blog!
I am hoping she'll see this and add a link for us to make it easy. I am at a loss right now with remembering the website addy. Pardon me! So, hope you add that link, Allie. Thanks a lot, Allie. Folks, you don't know what you're missing. Check it out!

12350 Oh, you are most welcome. Please do rephrase it,and for future reference, always remember the "R". LOL!
I look for your new blog entries every day,and I would miss it if you decided not to do it. I've wondered if more people look at it,but don't add comments. I bet there are. Keep mentioning it on here on Goodreads, and in the THE IMPORTANCE OF READING ERNEST discussion group. Hopefully, more people will read it. I think it's great.
