what happened to preb????

yeah, and you sent the same message three times.... is that like dorothy, clicking her heels together, and saying....
"there's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home." lol!

I've found that I can barely find any of Hemingway's stories online. I can find Faulkner, Twain, Poe, etc, but trouble finding Hemingways.... must be some copyright issues, since he has living relatives, i'd guess????

Sounds good to me!!!!

take this trivia test. post your score, and be honest! I got a 95%!

great movie , btw,and jeremy renner is amazing in the lead role. hemingway would have enjoyed that flick.

I think many men, hemingway included, could be emotional, and show caring toward each other, more comfortably between men, during a war type situation, that men couldn't share in everyday life, back in the states. even in the movie THE HURT LOCKER, it's ok for the soldiers to get drunk, and talk about how much they hate war,and cry, where they couldn't do that in a lockerroom in high school, or in the workplace. war was used as an effective mask to cover up the sensitive side of men, in general.
don't you think that's true, brad? hemingway used it the same ways in his writing.

I think it's so important to him, because he was in war. couldn't serve as a soldier, but still saw the horror of war as an ambulance driver, and he also was a reporter for the war,and it was a big part of his life. so,he wrote about it?? i think war was a much bigger issue for men of that time, because everybody served, instead of volunteered , as of today. people were closer, and all types of people were "drafted",and it made people care about each other more. now, most people don't even talk about what's going on in the middle east, unless they have a relative or friend there as a soldier. otherwise, people are disconnected, apathetic, and out of the loop , as far as any war is concerned.

Justin, check out THE CAT IN THE RAIN discussion, and also UP IN MICHIGAN. it's been smokin' lately!

Wow, brad! i see it that way too. even tho i knew it was a european setting, it hit me that it could be KEY WEST , which i've been to kand loved so much. i think hemingway loved tropical type climate, and palm trees because of where he chose to live most of his life. he liked the resort type lifestyle, and writes of it often.

I too noticed the repetition. I also felt the woman was looking to the cat for her happiness, because it was something she wanted, and could get, and george didn't put his book down long enough to give her that baby! i too felt the cat took the place of a child, something to love that would love her back, and give her attention.

We all also know that hemingway adored cats, and so did mark twain ! that in itself intriques me of both of those men,and hemingway comments on how twain set the pace for the great american novel. i have a quote of that on my "old" royal typewriter, in the roller, with a picture of hemingway on it too. hemingway used royal typewriters!

I really liked this story a lot. I too could feel the heat, and the wetness of the rain. I found it interesting that Hemingway kept saying the wife liked the man behind the desk so much. she liked everything about him. his looks, even his hands, and george came across to me as being cranky! he's like-- let the wife get what she wants without bothering him. he's too busy reading, and ignoring her. and then the man, that she likes so much said she needed the cat,and he sent the housekeeper up to her with the wet kitty.

I need to read this again!

interesting ideas....

hey justin! we don't mind at all. how cool to see you here. chime in all you want, buddy. we need some "hot" discussion going on here!

I think both the man,and the woman, were naive, innocent, and certainly inexperienced. both really didn't seem to understand how big a deal "sex" really is,and that the first time in most cases is less then gleaming, and can be disappointing. as they say......practice makes perfect! lol!

so... any thoughts boys and girls????

It's interesting to me, that so many of his stories imply sexual experimentation with the gay/lesbian lifestyles, or people trying to figure out their persuasions. makes you wonder about his sexual feelings in his life, and his sons, in particular, one of them. was it gregory, the cross dresser? gender issues seem "big" with hemingway. it just seems like a "theme" papa wants to explore over and over, doesn't it?

a short story with a powerful punch!
