1199115 The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie soon to be a film known as Flavia.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley by Alan Bradley

The plot revolves around an 11-year-old protagonist who discovers a dead body at her family’s dilapidated British manor house and becomes involved in a murder inquiry targeting her father.

The book, first of a series, was first published April 28, 2009 and won many
Literary awards ~~ Barry Award for Best First Novel (2010), Macavity Award for Best First Mystery Novel (2010), Anthony Award Nominee for Best First Novel (2010), Dilys Award (2010), Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel (2010), Agatha Award for Best First Novel (2009), CWA Debut Dagger (2007), Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Fiction & Mystery/Thriller (2009).

I would have thought a series would have been more appropriate for this but from all I can find there is - so far - only one movie to be made. We will see what happens as we go forward...

IMBd -
It says it is Based on the Flavia De Luce novels by Alan Bradley - see that s on novels? So not based on one book, but the whole damn slew? That is just too bad! So much to work with and so little effort!

1199115 Nope! hated the book. I would not have finished it except it was a book for an in person book club. This last Tuesday we met. Out of 17 people in attendance 15 disliked it. The number one reason for disliking it was the authors interruptions with his personal crap. No one liked that - even the two people who liked the book. Secondly everyone - all 17 - thought that there was probably a good 10 (or more) too many people in the story. Once it gets past about 6 characters I start to lose interest. We had an 80 minute discussion about this book and the things that people did not understand, and came to the conclusion that this author is not a very good author to have that many places in the story and that many people not understand what they were reading. No one plans to pick up his next book. I personally have read my first and last Benjamin Stevenson book. However...a good percent of those 17 people did say they would probably tune in to a series (it will be on HBO) when it starts - and make a decision from the first episode whether or not to continue watching. Everyone is hoping that a TV series will clean up all the unanswered stuff the author didn't bother with.

In looking his reviews are either 5 stars or 1 and 2 star. So this book is very decisive - either you love it or you hate it. Maybe it is an age thing? Or maybe not - my book club is pretty diverse in age and in gender - hmmm. Just one of those books - love it or hate it.

1199115 Still following along in this series. I guess the more I watch it the better I like it. Karl grows on you and I like the interaction between him and his daughter.

1199115 And I did binge them. Thought overall it was a pretty good series. Since I did not read this series of books I have no idea where this TV series fell in the list of books. And not sure they plan to go in chronological order of the books written, but think this may be a long term series.

I know season two is either in the can or being worked on right now. No idea when it will come out tho.

Took me a minute to recognize Ryan Eggold in this series, I loved the series New Amsterdam - which he starred in. Think he made a great 'bad guy'. However I did not realize that he was as young a he is - jsut turning 40. I would have said mid 40's at least.

1199115 I am reading this now and am not very enamored with it. I don't like what I feel most people do in this book. This is not a one on one conversation Buddy! Don't interrupt my story with things like "When I was writing this book...." Save the sh%t for your Author notes. So I may be an outlier on this one.

1199115 Oh Poo! One of the streaming services that I deleted. I just did not watch it enough to pay monthly for it. Soooo... I will try to snag a 10 day introductory plan once Conclave has competed it's run. Karen you are waiting for it so would you please give me a nod when it's playing it's last episode? I will binge it then. I would like to see it.

On a side note: I wonder how much longer these streaming services will go on on a month to month basis? I foresee that stopping and you having to commit to a 6 month or yearly lease. Not sure when that will happen, but I clearly expect it to.

Scarpetta (4 new)
Oct 09, 2024 10:53AM

1199115 Maybe the starting point???? Postmortem (Kay Scarpetta, #1) by Patricia Cornwell Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell

Scarpetta - Dr. Kay Scarpetta is best known as the beautiful blonde Chief Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia at Richmond. She is also known as one of the top forensic pathologists in the country. Along the way, the series also features FBI profiler Benton Wesley, Kay’s genius niece Lucy Farinelli, and the unhealthy and balding homicide detective, Pete Marino.

The Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell features 28 books - currently - starting in 1990. There is two seasons currently in production - with 7 episodes the first year. The second season is in production. There is no release date for this title yet.

I have no idea where this series is going to start within the 28 books. But there is a great line up of actors - Nicole Kidman as Kay Scarpetta, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dorothy Farinelli and Bobby Cannavale as Pete Marino.

a list of the Scarpetta books

The first book in the series, Postmortem, features this heroine in the same line of work as Cornwell, inspired by her career. The book begins with Scarpetta getting called in to a gruesome hanging in Richmond, Virginia where she is a medical examiner.

There are only a few clues left behind, including a strange smell, semen, and and a strange substance. The book makes a reference to DNA profiling which is a new practice. In addition to her job, Scarpetta must retain guardianship over her ten year old niece, Lucy.
