118012 A few people have mentioned reading Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel García Márquez for the World Lit Challenge, so we agreed it would be awesome to set up a buddy read for it.

Synopsis: In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.

Set in Colombia, it fits the World Lit challenge perfectly!
118012 Feel free to make this a buddy read, that would be super awesome!

I might even join you. :P

118012 Aha, I promise you Renee, I'm not that awesome. I just applied on a whim really and it came through. It's kinda nice having an electronic librarian counterpart to my usual volunteering in libraries!

118012 I'll probably be quite slow in starting this, with essays and my reading for next semester, but I'll definitely start soon.

What translations does everyone have?

I have a Maude copy, which I recognise from their translation of Crime and Punishment. But if anyone has any stand-out favourites, I might have a look in the library and see if I can find another translation.

118012 I happen to be a Goodreads librarian, so I'm happy to set it up for you :)

This version of the book appears to have a bit more information, although it is the Kindle version. You can also find a paperback version here.

I'm updating it to include a description, and any other information I can find.

118012 Feel free to set up your own threads in this folder to keep track of your reading!

118012 Oh my god that's an insane set! I'm so jealous!

Hopefully going to read a Trollope this year!

118012 Happy New Year everyone!

You've probably logged on to see a very different group staring back at you, but don't worry!

We've got a new picture and banner, along with all our new widgets up for the challenges! So please sign up to those!

The Genre Challenge widget is there, it's just buried under the other two. Us Mods are discussing it, so things might change.

Things are changing and happening still, so you might be a bit confused. If you have any questions, head over to our Questions thread to ask them. We'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Hope everyone had a blast last night, and aren't nursing too many hangovers!

118012 You sure it wasn't just to read War and Peace instead? ;)
118012 The only one I've managed to complete of Austen's is Northanger Abbey. I'll definitely be attempting this one to try get more of her works under my belt! :)

118012 That is an amazing list, Cristal, I definitely agree with Renee!

Speaking of Fingersmith, Renee, are we still doing the buddy-read in January?

I'm still finalising my reads for January (many will be Uni reads for next semester), but I'll definitely be reading it!

118012 Renee, stop tempting me!
