118012 I’m looking forward to getting into the Challenge game again this year. My clever fellow Mods have come up with so many intriguing types and varieties that I can’t wait to see where the year takes me. ☺️

A few personal goals ...

1) Read 120 books this year
2) Continue to chip away at the Guardian list
3) Focus on my Audible Library
4) Focus on my physical library (and move some along)
5) Complete more Challenges than I did last year

118012 I’ve been thinking that 2018 was not a very successful reading year. But as I look it over, I think I did alright in the end.

Well, I was definitely and unfortunately Challenge challenged. But I did alright on books.

I am looking forward to 2019, though. So Cheers to a new year!

118012 Welcome! Welcome! To all new members. January is a great time to jump into this group! So many lovely challenges are revving up for the year. WooHoo! 2019, Here we come!

118012 Do you want to map out an approximation of how many chapters you think you’ll cover in a week so we have some guidelines? I’ll be doing the audiobook and would be happy to work at your pace.

118012 I could be up for Anna Karenina to go with cold & snowy February. Seems like a good match.

118012 Definitions (Updated as questions arise)...

Middle Grade- also called "Intermediate." Usually a chapter book written for children between the ages of 9-15. Newbury titles would fit here. Also, the Harry Potter books, Beverly Cleary, Rick Riordan, the Magic Treehouse series, Little House series, Anne of Green Gables, The Black Stallion, etc.

Magical Realism- "Matthew Strecher defines magic realism as "what happens when a highly detailed, realistic setting is invaded by something too strange to believe." (from Wikipedia)
For example, Beloved or One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Epistolary- written as a series of letters (or diary entries). For example, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Made Into A Movie- does not have to be recently

Based on Mythology- some examples might be The Lightning Thief or Till We Have Faces or Grendel. Use your own judgement.

Color/Lettering blocks refer to the cover of the book. Wintery colors for this one. Spring Bingo will have different colors and categories. ;-)

118012 Mission: Claim at least one "Bingo!" before March 20 (the first day of spring)!

The Mods have put our heads together to create some new bingo categories and boards that will change with the seasons. (Fans of Karen's Original Bingo, don't worry... We'll be keeping that one for summer.)

RULES & GUIDELINES

Not too many of these as it is supposed to be fun after all :)

* As with traditional Bingo, you can go for a horizontal, vertical, diagonal, "X" or "around the world" (perimeter). Or aim big and go for a black out (all squares)!

* A book can only be used once on the sheet.

* Interpret the categories as broadly as you like.

* Feel free to copy and paste the template below to record your books:

118012 This challenge is a little different and a throw-back to the origins of the Reading Challenge group.

Mission: Read 50 books this year.

Plan: Keep track of your books any way you wish (in the Personal Goal folder, for example), then update here EACH MONTH with your total for the month and the year so far.

p.s. I have no plans to keep an overall group tally. But feel free to congratulate and encourage each other as you see members reporting their progress.
Jan 01, 2019 05:02PM

118012 This thread is for members who exceed (or plan to exceed) the 50 book goal.

I'm going to suggest that you cut & paste your "totals" template here once you hit the 50-Book mark, then keep going. There should be plenty of people who read beyond that point & will help keep up the momentum. :D

Good Luck!

118012 This year-long challenge is based on the game of Clue. Each character from the game represents the career of the MAIN CHARACTER (male or female) of the book you read.
For example, for Miss Scarlet/career in law you might go with The Firm. For MrGreen you might choose The Name of the Rose.

Miss Scarlet: career in law
Colonel Mustard: career in the military
Nurse White: career in medicine
Reverend Green: career in religion
Professor Plum: career in education
Mrs. Peacock: career in business
Sergeant Gray: career in law enforcement
Mr. Brown: career as a con artist or spy

Extra-Credit..
Mr. Black/Mr. Boddy: is dead or dies in the story
