Dwynwen was grateful that the girl hadn’t asked the question back to her, she almost sighed with relief. “Why are the girls here so nice?” She wondered to her self. Her grandmother had always told her that the Selection was fierce competition and not a place to make friends. Although Dwynwen couldn’t help herself. The thought of not at least making conversation with the other selected seemed beyond rude. “It is very lovely to meet you, I hope you’ll get some time with the prince later on,” Dwynwen said.
“Yes, I suppose that’s right,” Dwynwen said. She wasn’t so sure she believed it though. The selection was a very highly honored event and to be selected was more than just a trip. Thousands or girls had entered, and only very few were chosen. Dwynwen couldn’t exactly say that she wanted to be here though, but she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Her and her grandmother had worked on this for years, so why should she want anything different? Besides, it was a privilege to be here and she shouldn’t take it for granted. “Have you gotten a chance to speak with the prince yet?” She asked, trying to make conversation, but as soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them, hoping that Heista wouldn’t return the question.
Dwynwen looked up at the girl speaking to her, Hestia. She was a tall girl with dark curls spilling down her shoulders, accented with golden strands. The girl looked kind and tender, seeming as though she was genuinely interested in meeting a new friend. “Hello, I’m Dwynwen,” she said with a small curtsy, trying to be respectful but not as formal as she was with the queen. “I don’t believe we’ve met either. Are you here for the Selection?”
“It was a pleasure to meet you, my queen,” Dwynwen said with a curtsy as the queen quickly exited the room. She was shocked at how fast the queen had left, and she hoped nothing was wrong. Dwyn was rather pleased with herself. Finally she’d made an impression that she assumed wasn’t negative.
The queen seemed to approve of her and Dwynwen smiled deeper without realizing it. Bethany and her son seemed so drastically different and she had heard other girls saying that he had never left the kingdom. You would never have guessed that he was raised by a royal family, and he didn’t really have anyone else to influence him. ‘What a puzzling thing’ she thought.
“Why, thank you,” Dwynwen said to the queen, keeping the air in her voice. “My name is rooted in my elemental category. ‘Dwynwen’ is Welsh for ‘Wave’. I am a water elemental, although I specialize in the ice aspect of the element.” Dwynwen stood before the queen with a polite smile that hid her nerves. She knew how to act in a situation like this, but it was still nerve racking no matter how much experience she had. Dwynwen hoped she hadn’t bored the queen with the story of her name, or taken away from the other young ladies in the room. She looked over at the others and back to the queen to signal that she was done talking and wanted to hear what the other girls had to say.
Waiting outside the room, Dwenwyn decided to take her chances. She had already blistered her reputation, so what more did she have to lose? She prepared what she would say to the queen, exhaled and twisted the doorknob open.Dwynwen stepped through, “Pardon me, your highness,” she said with a deep curtsy, “I am Dwynwen and I have come to the kingdom to compete as one of the Selected. It is an honor to make your acquaintance.” She turned to the other girls, embarrassed that she had forgotten about them. “I hope I’m not bothering your time with the queen.” She said. Dwynwen noticed that one of the girls was Natalia, the girl who she had made friends with earlier. She quickly recalled the words that had been passed around regarding Natalia. Everyone knew that she was favored by prince Evermony to win. Now she was here with the queen? And she was making friends? This girl was tough competition.
Dwynwen walked towards the queen’s room, bunching her ball gown up like a proper lady to keep it from dragging on the ground. It was times like this when she hated being short. The closer she got to the queen’s room, the faster her heart beat. She had been waiting for this moment for a long time and now it was finally here! She made a promise to herself that she wouldn’t blow it like she did with the prince. She came upon the door, took a deep breath in, and stood on her tiptoes to peer inside. She saw two girls standing with the queen, and wondered if it was the right time to go in or not. She decided to wait for a few minutes outside the door, and see what would happen.
((Okay so since Natalia is in another scene right now do you care if I put my character into one as well and we come back to this later?))
