Dwynwen gave him a wink, “You never know,” she said, tossing a small snowball at him playfully. She gave him a wave and headed back towards her room. Her heart was somersaulting with excitement. This time, walking away from him felt much better than it had the last time, although she didn’t want to leave. She looked over her shoulder just to see him one last time and capture a photo in her memory. This was a moment she knew she would never forget and she tried to block out all thought of the Selection and just soak it up. Even as she walked away from him, she could feel his presence, his voice “not some ‘high-and-mighty selection girl that I have to pretend to like.” You
Dwynwen giggled, “Yes, dear Prince, we shall meet again,” she said extending her arm as a proper lady does when bidding farewell to a master. She loved spending time with Evermony and didn’t want to let him go, but she knew he had other girls to see.
Dwynwen laughed at the way he mimicked her, then realized what he had said. Did he really like her? “Some high-and-mighty proper selection girl that I have to pretend to like,” his words echoed in her mind. Had he just admitted that he liked her, or was he simply going along with the joke? She could tell that her shock was showing on her face and she quickly returned it to a normal expression.“Well, it was a pleasure spending the evening with you, oh high-and-mighty prince!” She said with an exaggerated curtsy and accent.
Dwynwen appreciated the prince’s response. He seemed as though he really respected the contestants, dispute how he’d acted when he came to her room. He was much more than she thought he was and she was truly beginning to like him. “You know, I’m really glad that you’re not some ‘high and mighty proper prince’ that I have to pretend to like,” she said, putting an exaggerated amount of air in her voice.
The way Prince Evermony was looking at her made her almost regret what she was about to say. He seemed so curious and so genuine and she didn’t want to ruin the moment. Yet, she had to know the answer to her question. “Have you already picked the winner of the Selection?” She hated the words. They sounded petty and arrogant, but it wasn’t how she meant them. She genuinely wanted to know. “And after the Selection what happens to the rest of us?”
Dwynwen sat there in the silence taking in the moment. She never wanted to let it go. It wasn’t until moments later that she realized this was a competition. A sour taste flooded her moth, it just felt so wrong. There were twelve other girls after him and she knew she didn’t stand a chance, especially not against Natalia. It stung deep inside her soul. This moment meant nothing because I’m a few weeks the prince would announce the winner and she would be sent home with nothing but bitter memories. Dwynwen sighed, not prepared for what she was about to do. This was her chance, if this time meant nothing she may aswell enjoy it while she had it.“Can I ask you something?”
Dwynwen felt herself blushing, accenting the scar on her left cheek. She shyly put a hand to it, then remembered what the prince had said “Just be yourself,” So she took it away. Her scars were a part of who she was, so why should she try to hide them? Dwynwen couldn’t believe she was opening up to a prince like this. He was much nicer than he seemed though, and she was really warming up to him. “You’re a pretty cool guy,” she said.
