That is pretty funny! I can't think of any of the top of my head...

The Geordie version of this is 'Alreet Marra!' ;)

Ha ha yes, I think you and I are from the same region Hilary - did you mention the Cheviots in another thread? Sorry Lee, I forgot that one might not be used everywhere!

Love this poem, I read his 'conversation' poems earlier in the year and really enjoyed them.

Yeah
(view spoiler)[ earlier on he is thinking that Tadzio is looking at him and it's probably just his delusion - I very much doubt that the lad is actually eyeing him up!. (hide spoiler)]On another note, I really need to read the rest of the stories in that volume as well.
I was thinking that too about Du Maurier as I will probably read
The Birds and Other Stoires pretty quickly.

It's got to be either a dream or some weird after life scenario - I like the Life on Mars angle (and that was an awesome series btw) - maybe he needs to help these people before he can move on? Everyone seems to want something from him, much more so than you would expect if it was just the case that he is a famous musician in town to give a talk and a concert.

Yum, homemade burgers! Fingers and toes crossed for lovely weather - have a nice time!

I think he would probably be quite flattered but he might want to take some stuff out - perhaps wouldn't want the wife to know about him 'playing' with Mr Howe in bed!

Next time use cases made of paper sugar and voila! problem solved :)
I have had my fair share of disasters too but I like clarting about in the kitchen too much to give it up and I eventually got better!

Yes
(view spoiler)[ he nearly gets away and then would probably have been fine but at the last minute decides to stay and from then on, it's just a matter of time (hide spoiler)]What did you think about the end?
(view spoiler)[ I found it a little ambiguous, yes he dies but the last thing he see's is Tadzio beckoning to him to following him out to sea which he was happy about (hide spoiler)]I haven't seen/read Don't Look Now - is it Du Maurier?
Lee wrote: "I really enjoyed Sea of Poppies - a really colourful, exciting adventure story and I learnt an awful lot about the opium trade as well!!"I'm enjoying it so far - the stuff about opium is quite interesting as I've been reading Sherlock Holmes and The Mystery of Edwin Drood lately and obviously opium dens feature in those stories so it's nice to see the other side of it, where the stuff actually comes from.

Ha Ha! That is so random - I bet he didn't think people were going to be reading about this all these years later!

I'm in the middle of baking a cake to take round to my friends as a house-warming gift, along with some of my jams and jellies to help stock up her cupboards! At work tomorrow, then taking the goodies round my friend's place, then on sunday I'm having a well-deserved rest and going for sunday lunch with another friend and her daughter ;)
Hope everyone has a nice relaxing weekend!

LOL this made me chuckle!

Yes, you knew something was going to happen and that sense of impending doom was palpable. I think I have got my head round it now (sort of)
(view spoiler)[ Auchenbach has gone all his life without really feeling any passion, he seems very cold and logical - especially for a so-called artist - so when he goes away to Venice and sees this beautiful young man he gets totally carried away by it. Now the bit I couldn't decide on was: does he experience this infatuation because his life has been without any real emotional content (his wife has been dead for a long time and he doesn't really seem to have anything to do with his family), or is he led towards it and then punished. I looked this story up and some critics have commented on the Greek symbolism - so Auchenbach is a follower of Apollo (metaphorically speaking) and having always denied the opposite - Dionysis, the god of wine and ecstasy etc - he is deliberately drawn into this obsession with Tadziu and which will lead to his death. I am inclined more towards the theory that he is led to it by forces outside as well as within himself cos I can't account for the mysterious red-haired man otherwise, and that feeling of unease seems to come from more than just Auchenbach himself (hide spoiler)]

I'm still in the early stages of
The Unconsoled and also reading
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh on my breaks at work (it's easier to fit in my handbag)

Yeah I think so too, we will just see how we all feel, I'll download it to my kindle now

That's a good website as well - I have saved it in my favourites to look at properly when I've got time.

Yeah, it's good isn't it? There's nothing wrong with gothic angst lol ;)

Like it - creepy! I might have to look up the rest of the novel now as it's not one of his that I've read before.
