I'm going to have to start writing these down.

Don't worry Hilary - it's been three months so we are due to have a new one anyway now aren't we? And we can keep the threads open so anyone still reading it can still comment :)

Good plan - I was wanting to read the Munro one so having her as our December author fits in nicely. Also re: Austerlitz - if I can find a copy I'm in! Sense and Sensibility was my 3rd choice to be honest although I will still read it.

Cool! I was hoping you lot would want to join in with at least some of them - will let you know what I get from the library ;)

Yes it's by the way - sorry, I assumed if I knew what it meant everyone else did as am usually the last person to figure these things out (I'm a 31 year old dinosaur!)
@Lee - disembodied pickled ear??? I can't wait!
@ Hilary - hope it picks up for you but I'm sure there's plenty other books demanding your attention so no point sticking with something you're not enjoying.
Just a general query, and I know this is probably jumping the gun a bit seeing as I only started Mason & Dixon last night but when do we start thinking about the next quarterly read?

Ha ha - I hate it when you try to explain something that sounded good in your head and people just give you blank looks! Happens to me all the time....
That said, it's a good idea ;)
Colm Toibin - The Testament of MaryEleanor Catton -
The LuminariesNoViolet Bulawayo - We Need New NamesJim Crace -
HarvestJhumpa Lahiri -
The LowlandRuth Ozeki -
A Tale for the Time BeingLuckily for me, my local library has a copy of all of these :)

Was looking through the Shortlist and past winners for this and realised I haven't read any of this year's contenders and very few of the previous ones.
So going to start with this years shortlist - winner announced tonight btw!

Is it an 18th century thing to capitalise all the Nouns? As you can probably tell from the Guardian 100 books list thread - I have pretty much missed this period out completely in my reading so I've got no idea but thought maybe he was deliberately copying the style of the time?
Hilary - how far have you got? I used to hate giving up, I made myself read all of Moby Dick when I was 13 just cos my English teacher said I would never finish it, but really didn't enjoy it! Now I usually go by the 50 pages rule (or 100 pages for something huge like this) - if I'm still not happy with it then, it gets abandoned.
BTW I'm looking forward to the talking clocks!

So how is every one getting on with this then?? I finally started last night and I actually really like it. The talking dog was totally unexpected, it's quite funny and rambling but in a nice way and I like Pynchon's attempt to write Dixon's Country Durham accent! Not an easy task for an American...
The only Thing I don't Like is the Capitals - a little bit Annoying but I am trying Not to let it Bother Me too much ;)

OK so I found the website for the ebook sharing I was talking about - it's called Boosh (as in BOOk SHare), am not very clear on how it works but you will have to buy the app I think. Here it is anyway and hopefully someone more technologically savvy than me can figure it out...

It's pretty horrific - and just thinking about how many people were probably wrongly convicted in the days before modern forensics and DNA testing really frightens me!

It's just crazy isn't it, wasn't really that long ago...

I'm defo starting it soon now I see you've given it 5 stars Ulli! I'd never heard of Fontane either - woefully ignorant about German Lit.

No worries :)

Ha ha, no I'm not put off - I will get round to it eventually.

It's still running - was last week actually. The parade was still on and the fireworks on the monday night and they still brought the shows up so as far as I know it will still be going! I hope so anyway - I was devastated cos I had to work when the fireworks were on :(

Crumbs - no wonder he was out of sorts!

Knew I'd seen one somewhere ;)
