Xavier sighed. “Yes, we probably should.” He squeezed her tight one last time and reluctantly let go.
Xavier looked at his watch. “Busted.” He rolled his eyes. “This thing is broken more than it’s working.” He looked up through the small holes in the cave ceiling. “From the color of the sky I’d say it is almost sundown. It’s been...six hours or so.” He chuckled.
Xavier retuned the kiss and hug. He put his arms around her, feeling complete. Never had he felt this way.
Xavier took her hand. He felt confident around Fiona. Not in the way he usually was. Around most people, he was the outgoing confident, proud person they wanted him to be. When he was with people he trusted and cherished, he became the kind and confident boy he really was.
Xavier got out into the knee deep water and pulled the canoe up on the underground beach. He worked in silence, every now and then glancing over at Fiona.
Xavier turned the little canoe toward the cave entrance and paddled once. It was a strong enough movement that they glided for a minute, able to look around and enjoy the beauty of the cave.
Xavier finally looked away, breaking the trance. “Yes, I guess it has. Ready to go?” He held out a paddle to her.
Xavier could feel the power flowing between them. He felt completely in control. He felt the power of their ice and fire. No longer were they opposites. Xavier felt pure joy for the first time.
Xavier looked at Fiona. He reached out and took her hands in his. "Peace." He spoke barely above a whisper. "We've found peace."
Xavier watched amazed. For once, his fire wasn't melting the ice. It was working with it. They seemed like one element, coexisting peacefully.
Xavier closed his eyes and created a flame. It swirled with color at first, but then calmed into a beautiful mix of reds and blues. As the sun was setting, the sea cave grew darker. Xavier carefully set his small flame onto the water where it "floated." He created more, in every color he could and set them adrift. "No, you don't." He said quietly. "You are perfect just the way you are."
Xavier thought for a second. "Probably green. It's the only color I can't make with fire." He laughed. "Ironic how it is the color of life while I am the opposite." He shook his head. "What about you?"
Xavier accepted the ripple puff and took a bite. "Thanks." He said with his mouth full so it sounded more like "Twamps."
