Marsilio Ficino ( AFI : /marˈsiljo fiˈʧino/ [1] [2] ; Figline Valdarno , 20 October 1433 – Careggi , 1 October 1499 ) was an Italian philosopher , humanist and astrologer , [3] among the most influential of the early Italian Renaissance .
In contact with the major academics of his time, he was a follower of Neoplatonism and the first translator of the complete works of Plato into Latin , [4] whose doctrine he considered propaedeutic to the Christian faith so much as to affirm:
«In our times divine Providence loves to place religion on the rational authority of philosophy, until at the appointed time, as it once did, it will confirm it everywhere with miracles . Therefore, for the inspiration of Providence we interpreted the divine Plato and the great Plotinus .

His Florentine Academy , an attempt to revive Plato's Academy , had considerable repercussions on the development of European culture at the time .
