Did You Notice Something a Little Different?

Posted by Maryana Pinchuk on December 15, 2015
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.

If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.

What’s different?

  • To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.

  • To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.

  • To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.
  • Before:

    After:

Our approach was simple: Improve the usability of the site and give it a cleaner, more modern look, while preserving the familiar feel of Goodreads—a unique home for readers.

Let us know what you think!

Erma Talamante Myeah. Still looking forward to seeing something change, but will be exploring the other sites available too.

I still think having to put add-ons just to use a site is BS and indicates less cause for the site to do their duty to their members.

I agree. I've said before it is stupid for a user of this website to get a hundred different applications and spend their time and internet on stuff just to use one site better and messing with the rest of the settings for other websites / their computer.

Eddie you can argue principle of the matter all you want till you are blue in the face... see where it gets ya..

meanwhile.. I am comfortably using the site with no problems... and i am ensuring ad blocker is running..

Ayman Teaman How hard is it to roll back to the original font, I mean it was working, wasn't?

I appreciate the new layout but my biggest issue is with the font, it is not usable for more than 1-2 1minutes.

I have to use stylish to be able to use the site, this is stupid!
Why do I have to have addons to view a single site?

    Please fix this!

Erma Talamante Ayman wrote: "How hard is it to roll back to the original font, I mean it was working, wasn't?."

It may be that they trashed the old code without saving it somewhere. I have seen this happen, and makes for more headaches than it should.

It could also be why GR is so resistant to returning to the classic look until the bugs are gone from the current settings.

I had this concern cross my mind immediately after the change (I had thought I needed to update again, or had broke the lappy). But as time progresses, the idea has cemented itself in my head.

Mind, you, though, I don't know for sure. This is conjecture. But conjecture based on experience.

Erma Talamante Eddie wrote: "you can argue principle of the matter all you want till you are blue in the face... see where it gets ya..."

It usually gets me in trouble, and then I see change for others. I don't mind, as long as there is positive action.

You seem to have a defeatist attitude towards this, and that is understandable, Eddie. I am glad that so many people took it on themselves to create layouts for the site. It certainly does help some people (but looking at your example was making me nauseous - that color is horrid, but glad it helps you).

But it does not address the primary issue. It, rather, turns a blind eye to the problem a la "If I can't see it, it isn't happening."

So I will keep looking for change. Positive change.

On a side note. Since yours is fixed for you, why are you still here, bah-humbugging our valid complaints? It seems counter-productive.

Eddie I am here, to help others where possible, and to keep reminding Goodreads that this huge error of theirs can not simply be forgotten and pushed under the rug with grandmas spilled ashes..

    message 2813: by Jane (new)

Jane Or -- they don't want to apologize and admit they made a stupid error in changing everything so fast. I too wondered if they were fool enough to dump everything about the previous way the site looked; possibly, if they had saved it, they could have just returned it to the way it was. You can call me a cynic.

The thought also crossed my mind, but then I gave them the benefit of the doubt since the very first thing you learn as a programmer is to archive everything so it's easy to roll back changes. But then, considering that I'm not convinced they did other programming best practices/SOP like testing on multiple platforms and browsers...

M'rella I am using Stylish, but I actually thought of leaving the thread and maybe GR altogether, since I do have accounts on both Leafmarks and Booklikes.

However, if we stop bugging GR about this mess, nothing will ever be done ...not that I think anything will ever be done with the current business arrangement, but I feel it's my reader duty to keep poking.

Out of curiosity, whose bright idea was it to "revamp" the site? There must be a person(s) responsible. I would really like to hear what they have to say about this fiasco and explain further sporadic bouts of disastrous activity in this new, apocalyptic GR.

Kikyosan "Somethıng Turkısh" when I write my comments:
I like the font used in writing comments, but there is a single annoying details: when I write an "i" after a "f", the dot on the "i" disappears and it looks like a Turkish undotted "ı".
Nothing against the Turkish, on the contrary, I was wondering if they noticed this confusing detail.

I mean the sans serif, the one I'm using right now before posting these words.

    message 2832: by Ivan (new)

Ivan Ramljak There are a bit too much comments to read them all, so I would just like to add in case someone already had not, the new font is really not adapted well to the Slavic languages with a Latin script, which is kind of weird seeing as the font was made by a Polish guy.
Anyway, in both the reviews and messages, letters with diacritics, such as č, š, ć, ž, look bad.

    message 2833: by M'rella (new)

M'rella Can someone point me to a Stylish style that makes the links stand out more (different color, perhaps?) I am not color blind, but I feel like I am, when trying to find links in the comments. Hate to think what people who are color blind are experiencing.

    message 2835: by Lobstergirl (new)

    Lobstergirl Bug:

    https://www.goodreads.com/review/stat...

On My Books > Stats page, details view, the stars in the left column are not aligned properly horizontally with the book covers. There are pale gray lines separating the star categories; sometimes the stars are substantially below the line, sometimes barely below it, and sometimes they are partly overlapping with it.

I don't think it was this way before, I would have noticed. Sloppy looking.

The bug appears regardless of what magnification or non- you are using.

Just curious: looking at pub year in your stats, you seem to have read a lot of books in the early 1900s that weren't even published then. Did you do that on purpose, or should 1909 be 2009, etc.?

    That would be nice, too!

I'm still hoping for a nice background, or better font contrast, or decorative sidebars, or dividers, or something to break up the massive amount of whitespace on the screen...

It looks so bland and vanilla... not even vanilla... like egg whites. Flavorless.

Never going to happen unless drastic events take place or they decide to mess with us again. Everyone has calmed down and learned to deal with it by whatever means available. So, why should GR bother?
