Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

I actually like the bigger font for my shelves and the long names squeeze themselves in nicely without breaking the lines.
However, this is just another show of "whatevahs" approach. The changes should be consistent through the browsers and through the OS.
I appreciate attempts at fixing things, but they are just not good enough for everyone to see :(
Either hire back the original designer, sinc, they at least were good at what they did, or hire someone with OCD, someone who can concentrate on doing the job right.

I am probably talking to myself here:
Am I the only one uncomfortable with "status update"? If I insert a picture in it and save t, all I can see is code, just like the italics of bolds don't show, but corresponding tags do. I have to click "view status updates" to see the post properly. It wouldn't hurt to have a Preview button for it either.

no they don't

that's a rhetorical question, right? because we all know the answer.

Considering the wide array of options out there, I'm worried much less.
And found out something interesting...
Amazon is canceling their site, Shelfari, and importing all of their members here. Could explain alot of the new changes, making it easier for the imports, and to hell with the natives...

But whatever. They don't care so.

Actually, as I understand, Shelfari members are left to their own devices and do not get any help from Amazon with exporting their books/groups/discussions etc. A lot of them are migrating to Leafmarks, as in some respects that site is closer to Shelfari than GR is.

In the context of presentation or in the context of discussion? :-)

Lol

I think we should start a thread "Vote of No Confidence".

ha-ha... that idea has been introduced before. never worked, unfortunately :/
@stephanie
Not familiar much with Medicare. Sorry :/ I guess it's a good reference then :D

All this endless fucking around. Just put the size of member profiles font back to the way it was, so I can view the site at 110% comfortably.
I have to change my browser magnification when navigating from PAGE TO PAGE. This must be the definition of bad website design.

Not every machine/browser displays the new design correctly, it's a huge no-no in web-design. I cannot possibly say "well done" to compliment a sloppy job.
And guess what? Don't get comfortable yet. Haven't you heard?
"Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future."
*Bolds are mine.
I am afraid to think what's coming next.

Let's face it it's crystal clear that goodreads don't give a shit if users are actually able to read each other's reviews and status updates anyway so I wouldn't put any kind of nutty design ideas past them. I'm sure we'll have polkadotted profile pages and stripy book ones. Perhaps we should have a contest to see who can come up with the most bonkers looking design and the prize can be that goodreads implement it! I think even at our worst we'd do better than the current design team

Roflmao - You hit the nail on the head!

Nope :( We'll ever be so lucky. They are trying to "simplify and modernize ... visual design". We'll be stuck with white on white or black on black.... or whatever color for font and background that's "new" black.
I am just going to stop posting, like I actually did in the beginning, because it was obvious back than that nothing was going to come out of it anyway.
Should have never come back - waste of time :(

True. They don't care. And obviously their talentless hacks. That's all folks !

On the My Books > Stats page, in details view, the stars on the left are misaligned in relation to the horizontal lines separating 5 star books from 4 star books from 3 star books, etc. Sometimes the stars are between the lines, sometimes they overlap with the lines.

This glare is still a bitch and I hate the colour. I hate the round stupid profile ding dong and I hate that for the longest time even if your profile is set to only receive messages from friends, if you send out a group mail, none friends can get in that way!
Also its stupid when someone sends you a friend request, you decline, but now their previously private profile is still viewable by you!
The new text is also bullshit.
CHANGE IT FUCKING BACK YOU STUPID FUCKING MORONS!

(Because having multiple threads and then only responding in one makes so much sense.)

(Because having multiple threads and then only responding in one makes so much sense.)"
GR staff don't strike me as having such a thing as "sense" - common or otherwise.

It seems like they have restricted themselves to their group only: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

If that doesn't hammer home how little they give a shit about their users nothing will. I always knew we were insignificant little fleas according to them but I wonder how much their precious site would be worth if we all deleted our content? I don't want to have to go that far but the alternative sites are improving all the time while goodreads just stagnates or gets worse so tell me goodreads - what possible motivation do we have to stay?

We shouldn't have to fix it ourselves! You keep saying that but I say I refuse to get one hundred and one new programs to view just one damn site better!

its one add one.. and it has lots of styles to make many of the top websites look better.. facebook google.. youtube..
you keep holding out hope for the site to get fixed... I perfer to be a realist and accept the fact the Goodreads staff are quite incompetent..

I appreciate you telling people about Stylish, because it might be helpful to some, but please understand that not all of us are able to install it, and many of us don't want to bother because of one website.
I have no problems with other sites, and I didn't have a problem with GR either, but now everything's screwed up. For me personally, there are no bugs, but the fonts are ugly and difficult to read (especially without the borders, which the staff has said won't be returning).
I suggest you all go to the feedback section, the blog announcements tend to be forgotten after a while.

I have Stylish, but I keep switching it on and off, because I want to see how everyone else is doing and what's changed, if anything.

I understand. It's addictive :D Over 3000 messages, must be a record :D

Actually, it hasn't been a month, because there has since been staff replies in the feedback section and some minor changes have occurred.
Goodreads won't probably do any major changes to the overall layout, but complaining is better than being passive and doing nothing. At least then there's a chance, even if it's just a teeny tiny, practically nonexistent, one.
When it comes to the dark background... No, just no. Some like it, some don't. For me, it's difficult to read. If I see one more PowerPoint slide or website with a dark background and a glaring white text...

Good for you, nobody's stopping you. Like I said, not all are able to install anything extra in their computers.

I'd love to sign a petition! One of the problems is, that most users are passively getting used to the layout, and some just leave or some don't care enough. Maybe exactly because this is a free website?
I agree about the computer thing. I know many who don't have any need for small gadgets, and that should be taken into consideration in web design.
