Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

We could try at change.org? If anyone does set up a petition there, please post here so that we can go sign it. I don't know anything about that site personally but I hear it's had some good results.

No, I completely get it. I've been wondering what the effect on GR stats have been these past few weeks, and how much it matters to them. Like you said, some users purchase books through GR, so I'm having a hard time understanding why Amazon would shoot themselves in the leg. Are they really such a big company that a few lost users and lost user activity doesn't matter?
Time will tell.
And I don't really blame those who want to adjust quietly. I've been here since 2007, so I'd have a hard time letting go, too.

When problems happen anywhere, I always feel like I should at least try something, and now I ha..."
I do have experience with petitions - and successful ones, I am happy to report. Today is bad to take care of writing one up - my two year old is sick, and needing her mama. But tomorrow is a new day, if enough people are interested!

you need to send your complaints to Amazon.com. They paid over 200 million dollars for thiis mess...

Amazon doesn't give crap about GR. The whole merger thing shouldn't have happened. It's a conflict of interest: Amazon sells books and then buys out and now controls a book review site. Sounds like a bad joke. Only it's not.

I've also found that being nice and civilized will only get you so far. Whoever said that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar was living on another planet or not dealing with the current set of unfeeling, useless, uncaring, incompetent, illogical, inefficient and bungling fruitcakes that have pervaded every kind of commercial and industrial industry.

Doing something is always preferable to rolling over and taking whatever you are handed. Here's hoping we can get enough on board!
PS - for a successful campaign, you need to detail the issues, and list what we want done with it, otherwise all we got is a list of names. There also needs to be a name of who the petition and signatures (*ahem* usernames) will be going to.
One of my favorite quotes: "Well behaved women rarely make history!"
Despite Eddie's dissent, I think if we can get our voices together as one, we will create change. To change!!

Please take your spam elsewhere, or better yet, don't take it anywhere at all.
(Flagged.)

The other day I had an AUTHOR come onto my group and put up one of his financial books on the bookshelf.
It is so disrespectful.

Wow, the bloody nerve! I hope you reported them.

That must have been satisfying :)

Admittedly though I did not report them. I just deleted their nonsense and blocked them :)
And yes. Yes it was.

What is the big secret?

Back in October, I was getting Sponsored Personal Selection emails, despite having unchecked any and all appropriate boxes for getting unwanted emails and recommendations. I contacted GR directly about it and got it fixed. As I told them, I don't want unsolicited recommendations for what people think I should read. You might want to contact them directly, too. Especially if you have to deactivate it EVERY day.
(I will note, I think I stopped getting the basic newsletters I didn't mind getting about then as well, despite telling them I didn't want to unsubscribe from everything. Hmmmm....)

Staff is asleep."
On the contrary. Staff are emptying bottles of champagne. Opposition has finally shut up (a foreseeable outcome).

I can cite one example of a transparent support model such as "feedly" company.
I'd appreciate some clarity on what is it that they plan on fixing and "when", especially that we are talking about a website design where they can just roll back.
I mean....not to mention the fact that there are no alpha or beta testers, nothing.
What makes the whole story sad is that this is a website for books, reading, reviews, more reading..and it is difficult to read.

Why can't you just change it back to the way it used to be and avoid this whole nonsense?

It's all very well for you to say that you've been responding in the feedback group but not all of us are members of that group (or even want to be!). You specifically created this thread for us to tell you about problems & it's the only place that most light goodreads users will know to look for answers so the least you can do is monitor it and have the decency to reply occasionally. That would be how a company with GOOD customer services would operate but considering I now think of this site as BADreads I wouldn't expect anything less than rubbish service.

Please don't create visual garbage just to fill up white space.

Thank you........
There are also people like me who have been banned from Feedback Group (Meghan, I'm sure you are aware) and thus unable to post there. This thread is the only place I can raise issues and bugs related to the redesign.
Meghan, please have someone go through my posts in this thread and ADDRESS THEM. There are NUMEROUS BUGS I have posted about in this thread which have still not been addressed.
I am not going to repost every single f***ing one.
You work here. Not me. You do the work.

Right, because that is going to work well.

Fully agree, Shauna.

They created the bulk of these problems with the new design layout!! So now they have a bunch of problems to fix and can't manage it. Sounds like the government! Maybe they can create a whole new agency to fix the problems they created lol!

Shauna - Totally agree.
Savannah - I take high offense to that. We're not just all a bunch of bratty kids whining. Numerous people have stated that their EYES GET SORE and they SUFFER FROM MIGRAINES now when using this site. I read at least ten times people saying they used GR LESS BECAUSE OF ITS NEW DESIGN.
Frankly this is also the SECOND time they have redone their image since I have been a member and both times it was a disaster! They can't keep changing it like a fucking roulette wheel hoping to land on something people like!
People shouldn't have to get new programs to view GR better or change settings on their devices for just viewing one site better.
I have my own issues too, mainly that sending a group mail bypasses friends only mail settings. And GR overall lack of dealing with bullies. Which has been an issue for me since the time I joined. This site needs improving so that EVERYONE can have an enjoyable experience and right now it is not enjoyable!
GR advertised itself as a vintage elegant muted lovely book website where people can come and interact with each other and talk books. Or even role play. Or even make gorgeous template designs, expanding their creativity. But with the new design the majority of elderly folk or people with medical issues can't enjoy this site, the text took ages to get to a decent look and template makers are in an uproar because their previous works now look like shit.
The majority of all demographics are unhappy. I don't think it is any website's aim to make its users unhappy. That is the problem, that is the issue. That and GR staff complete and utter lack in HEARING US. ITS USERS WHO ACTUALLY USE THE DAMN SITE! The people who SHOULD matter. Hell they don't even humour us! And then when they do they spew a bunch of shit like their new look.
And really, I am sure that I speak for all of us in saying we have nothing against the GR staff personally. I'm sure they are lovely people. The problem I have is their work ethic. Shauna is right. It is their jobs! Running the website and making people happy are what they are bloody paid to do! By us! The tax payers! I am sure they get a lovely fat salary for 'handling' the situation. A situation they are supposed to fix, because it is their jobs, but don't. Again I have had issues for the last three years! Surely it doesn't take that long! And by the sounds of it, Lobstergirl has had issues for even longer then me.
Maybe they should fix the complaints to not get them huh?
And really, you say it yourself. SOME people didn't have an issue, While EVERYONE has an issue with it. So you defeat your own logic.
And frankly changing the carrot stars back to red stars is not enough progress. And please, I agree with Lobstergirl, no junk to 'fill up' the damn space. I'm sure GR will just fuck that up too.
I mean seriously.
