Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

I love most of the design change, but even after the update the font in Chrome is still fuzzy compared to Firefox, where it looks fine. There's a HUGE difference in readability in Firefox vs Chrome for me right now, and Chrome is my default browser.
You need to change the header QUIZ QUESTION on the book page. It is insulting to writers of trivia (which are separate from quizzes).https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Behind the click are trivia AND quiz, but if you look at the book page you would only think there was a quiz (or several quizzes).
This is the case for EVERY book which has trivia and quiz. Only the quizzes are sitting there on the book page.
Are you trying to discourage people from taking trivia?
At this point the thing that bothers me the most about the interface is that so much of the sans-serif content is very very small. If it were bigger it would be more readable. Although, a serif typeface for all large blocks of text-- like blog postings -- would be more readable.

The onus should be theirs.

Agree. The header should at least say quizzes and trivia, not just trivia, and then list # of trivia questions and quizzes available. And when I clicked onto the trivia link, the book is displayed for most of the trivia questions so every question is spread out and not very pleasing to the eye. They should fix that.
It looks like the spacing was increased between the lines for the serif font, in reviews and comments? This helps, although the glare of the screen, and apparently the thinness of the font itself, is still giving me eyestrain and headache. I have magnification at either 110-120% and have turned down my screen brightness. But the glare and eyestrain continue.

I like IE, but GR is unbearable using that browser. I always keep my zoom at 130%, no matter where on the internet I am.

leave all 3 running... nice font... easy on the eyes.. whoever thinks small black text on a white screen is 'good design' needs to be shot!!!
...And now the screen is screamingly bright. The font isn't as blurry, which is good, but the screen is so freaking bright. And to look at my home page, I still have to resize the screen larger to read everything. Which wouldn't be so bad, except I have to resize the screen smaller in order to write and read my reviews. And where did the Preview button on the reviews go?!

Exactly what I did. Now I can spend time on Goodreads, whereas before the new font and glaring white background was making me physically ill. The design team all need to be dismissed. I come on Goodreads to interact with readers, not to get migraine headaches.
Maybe I'm just getting used to it, but I notice the glowing brightness of my laptop screen a lot less today. I guess they have made some adjustments. I'm now mostly bothered by the super tiny font of private messages and the My Books page. The lack of black text on the discussions tab is also still an issue.
Please fix.A friend in my feed just liked a review by a non-friend. This review has 12 - TWELVE - enormous images before the "read more of this review" link. This is unacceptable. I think if I printed out these images actual size the part of the review visible in my feed would be about 3-4 feet long.
Did you tweak something in the feed? I have never seen that many images just in the "preview" of a review that a friend liked in my feed.
While overall the layout is more elegant, the serif font is very difficult to read. It looks faint. Now as I'm typing, in san serif, it too appears faint, grayish rather than black. A do-over or adding reading visibility options for each user might be in order.
Something needs to be done about the transition from italic serif to non-italic. The words are ridiculously close together. The Buried Giant discusses

I think that some of these changes are enough to deter people from using GR. I'm usually on everyday and I've only logged in for a second to see if it's switched back since it switched. I have a long list of books I need to add/update, but I don't want to have to squint. My eyes are killing me trying to read this blurry nonsense. I use Chrome and a PC. I shouldn't have to adjust anything on my end just to READ GR.
Kelly wrote: "The font is super-choppy and hard to read, no matter how much I enlarge it. 90 seconds of this and I already have a headache. Hate hate hate."Choppy, yes! That's exactly the adjective.
I use Safari browser on my Ipad. The new font is too small and too faint. I have to strain my eyes to see or keep enlarging the page. After a while it becomes tedious.
I am now spending only a few minutes at a time at this site when I used to stay waaay longer. The lousy font and the glaring white background are terrible on the eyes. It's a chore to read things here!
It’s hideous. Awful. Terrible. Please go back to the old design!!!!! I use Goodreads for hours--but this could kill it. IT”S AWFUL
Since the update I can't find the preview button for reviews? What's with that? :/ How am I supposed to check if all the formatting is correct before posting a review if I can't preview it?

from whare? and is this for widows?
http://prntscr.com/9geg2qhttp://prntscr.com/9gefo0 this is what goodreads looks like to me..
Goto Google type in stylish and either chrome or firefox
install the add on to your browser
NOW
goto
https://userstyles.org/styles/23516/m...
install that
THEN
goto
https://userstyles.org/styles/121888/...
install that
make sure BOTH are running on goodreads.com
the first one is a global dark style.. that CAN work nicely on EVERY website..
the second style affects the font print and size
yes there are site specific styles.. google/gmail youtube facebook twitter yahoo
https://userstyles.org/
but for anything other than the BIG websites.. the global style works perfectly!
if you have any questions, drop me a pm... this will be my final post to this thread..
Eddie!

I used the goodread fix and NOT the dark :)
I'm very happy! Thanks Eddie, but really.... GR should remove this font, clearly many people are bothered with it.
WHY ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT THIS ISSUE? NO ONE IN GR IS PAYING ATTENTION. WHERE IS THE STAFF? WHERE ARE THE PROGRAMMERS? MAKES NO SENSE TO HAVE OVER 2700 POSTS AND NO ONE IS RESPONDING.. ITS LIKE GOING TO WALMART WITH NO CASHIERS IN SITE. HELL THATS WHEN YOU GO TO TARGET....MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL.....I AM OVER 58, AND HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THIS CRAP, AND NO ONE IN THE HIGHER DESK HAS SAID NOTHING...NOTHING.....

They do respond to email though my limited experience with them (2 times) indicates they were courteous.
Check the walkaround Eddie posted (right above my post), it makes things much easier.

You are right, I just realized 2800+ comments... this is one of the hottest blog posts in terms of user interaction...I have in goodreads doing the right thing :)
I have to rely on GR to fix their mess; I'm low-tech. Obviously they don't care if they might lose members because of this nonsense.
Staff are responding in this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and have promised that fixes will go out on Monday (see msg #1051).

Are you still seeing this? What browser/OS are you using.
Thanks so much for that screenshot, and just a note to all others that screenshots really help us to step into your shoes and diagnose issues correctly.
Please note that our next updates will be released on Monday, but please do feel free to continue to post feedback here. We are reading and reviewing every single comment, even if we are not always able to respond right away.

Ack! I was off-line for about a week and came back to this. Hurts my eyes!! It's blurry and gives me a headache. I read it's supposed to get fixed on Monday -- I sure hope so!!

I'm impressed, a response! Thanks Emily and thanks lethe for pointing this out.
Suggestion
Maybe GR should look into posting new thread (that is locked) with staff responses? That or use an approach like how other companies are doing it such as Google by having "support staff" responses highlighted/at the front and/or filtered to show only those.
This will make supporting people much easier and let them know that their concern is heard :)
Designed for phones, so I guess all of us old-timers who use desktop PCs with larger screens can just fuck off.
Excuse me, but I am one of those "OLD TIMERS",(SMILE),,But folks, please take note on how many are talking about this, and GR isn't/hasn't done anything..This is how companies fail....HUMMMM

Thank you.
I'm not sure how I missed it.
It's looking really modern and clean. I like it :)I think some may have issues because the spacing is not that obvious between words since the letters itself has spaces between them, but to me the new font is really similar to Apple's after the recent upgrade on iOS...the San Francisco font, if I'm not wrong.
Artemis wrote: "I think some may have issues because the spacing is not that obvious between words since the letters itself has spaces between them"That is totally not what I'm seeing. It looks like everyone's experience with the new stuff differs based on what device and browser they are using. Maybe it even varies by what operating system we use. Weren't the changes supposed to make things more consistent?
