Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

This website DEFINITELY needed new fonts and colors instead of fixing old problems.
Oh wait...NOT.

So if those of you that created those thingies are in this thread, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I should have to install stuff just to view a website, but you guys made it possible for me to spend time again on one of my favorite sites.

What I DO hate is that I can't load status comments using the Android app.

Good job, GR, thanks for the improvement!"
I personally would like NOT to hate, but I do, because the new font gives me and the majority of the readers here physical pain. Have you not read any of the comments?

I don't like the blue colour and new font, I can't see how it should make things easier to read, for me the old layout worked better.
But I hate changes, period, so I don't think anything would have found my approval, especially since everything was great as it was.

I also can't agree more with this statement from a previous comment: "Still, Goodreads, can you fix this? I'd rather not have a million 'extensions' on my browser when the site should just work. "

I hold no hope for anyone on GR team moving a single finger to help us, been failed by it so. many. times.

Amen, Atunah! Same for me - I used the extensions and I appreciate whoever created them.

I read and write Arabic, but I'd hate to do it on this site now - I can't even see separation to any of the lines above. It's one long squiggle that's indecipherable, to me.
ETA: And it's even worse when quoted and italicized.

HORRIBLE
and you don't know what's what on the startpage - the lines have all disappeared it's all so together now - no seperation between different posts ... and the weak colors of the STARS and and WANT TO READ icons and links - ugh - why does everything always have to be changed - this is not FB - this was an amazing page, but this new stuff - not my thing... I hope I'll get used to it.

I have no problem with Lato, although I can see why some people think it's too small.
Aside from my problems with Merriweather (It's a terrible screen font), I wish the serif vs. sans-serif font selection was more consistent. If all the headers were serif and the body text was sans-serif, that would work. But when I'm looking at my profile page, and the assignment is different between the "currently reading" and "recent update" feeds, and then different again in reviews and comments (and even where I type is Lato, though it will display as Merriweather!), we have a problem.
I'm OK with the gradient removal, but not with the total removal of section headers. It looks like different sections are just floating, unanchored, and I'm not sure the chosen colors provide enough contrast.
I don't particularly like the... salmon-peach(?) color chosen for the review stars, but I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.
My problems with Merriweather have already been discussed.*(See message 2532 on p. 51)

I see most people don't like the serif font, but I'm not digging the sans-serif. I can't read sans-serif on a good day. Dimming down or softening up the back-ground would I think. It's too bright in my opinion. Need something not 'true white'.

Ya, I don't like the san serif font, fwiw. But suppose I will survive it.

I don't care either way. Change for the sake of change.

Why are you doing this to us? No one can read anything in Goodreads... so from now on you are Badreads for me.

Also... as you're fiddling with fonts, there's actually only one thing that *really* bothers me on Goodreads. I just wish the author dashboard had a feed that showed new reviews on all the author's books. A pipe dream I've had for years :(
