Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

Although I don't mind most of the changes, the grey font color that is being used for some of the group discussion updates and html links on Goodreads, is just too light. It would also be nice if the font size was bigger.

Been that way before the change..."
I literally previewed and posted a review at midday and layout was the old one with the preview option at the bottom. :S

Um. I bet you won't believe I thought of this name all by myself huh? I thought I was original but...

You should read Legend of the Seeker though.
It's a good read. ^^

And the background, which is the main cause of the headache for me a number of other people. They didn't change it but they took away contrast and/or gradients to the site which make it much more glaring.

Thanks for the suggestion, and for the name like. Sorry it just wasn't what you thought. Trust me I felt the same way...

Just happened :( It looks too busy now. All bunched up at the top. And I thought GR was on a de-cluttering mission :(
I mean I can live with it, just - what's the purpose of it?

It's all good. ^^

I wonder if they expected all of this negative reaction?
In some respects, I do feel bad for them because I'm sure someone(s) put a lot of time and effort into the changes.

Don't forget, someone got paid a lot for it too ;)

Separators are needed between trivia questions. As it is, they all run together visually.

It's actually worse for me on the homepage on the discussion tab (I really miss the actual tabs!). All text is either greenishblue or light grey (or red). Why is the greenishblue text not black? I'd imagine that'd make it easier to read.
And most text on the My Books page is still very very small (book titles, shelf names...). Not consistent with the size of text in discussion threads.

Same :( I could live with the whole change, just please, put the preview option back :(

Its not just you. Everyone is complaining about the whiteness. And frankly to add onto that the none coloured highlights is putting me off. When it was green I knew there was a link to the page or to somewhere now I don't know! Also, its just a mess. And I can't even see my books page. Still.

Under Currently Reading on the main page, at 100% mag it reads normally (everything on the same line where it belongs, e.g. p. 136 of 336 ( 40 %) update status). At 110% mag, the %, but not the number, jumps to the next line. At 120% mag, it reads normally again.
I have to be at 110-120% in order to see anything, so please fix this.

No, it was never that small. At 100% it's unreadable. I've been at 120% mostly since everything became harder to read.

Is it because the smaller font is more compatible with devices other than pc's? The size is exceptionally small on my laptop.

They are responding to feedback in this topic, mostly making minor font/size adjustments and padding changes as well as patching browser specific bugs. Apparently you won't see any more updates until Monday at this point and any reference to modifying the major design elements such as color scheme and layout were vague comments about "design team discussions" at a later date. Since the update Tuesday they have been in emergency response mode triaging everything that broke as a result. Those users hoping for some kind of roll back to the old design, well I I think it's safe to say that ship has probably sailed and sunk.

Enough to strike fear into the hearts of GR users.

Thanks for the link Tal. More cohesive color palette? Improve usability? Removal of extraneous design elements? They must be joking! And I have yet to see one response to everyone's complaint about eyestrain. I certainly hope they fix the minuscule size in the comment boxes and pms. I need about a 200% zoom to read it. lol
BTW Tal, I was so excited last night I missed the headers! Thanks for that too, sooooo nice along with everything else!

Comment box text size seems to be fixed for me. How come some users see some change and others don't?

lol. I got more coded at lunch today, another 20 or so elements updated to the retro look, finally all the .greyText is dark enough even on a white background to be readable. Once I have all the text & link colors updated I'll re-create the borders and backgrounds. I came up with a new color palette for myself that I think you may like even more than the old colors.

Awesome! Looking forward to it! :)

That being said, I do agree that 12px is just a bit too small for larger sections using Lato, eg the messages and profile blurbs--I found 13px to be a great deal more agreeable for such a small difference. I think the size is fine for the shorter interaction and shelf links, but I wouldn't object to those being made slightly larger as well.

Listopia header (City Life) looks terrible - full of tiny holes and gaps - anyone else seeing that? I'm at 110%.

Someone had to justify their salary.

No, I'm saying other websites that also use webfonts but with different fonts do not have these types of issues.

And the dropdown boxes for the start and end dates are not aligned, which looks amateurish.

You cant please everyone though ;)

Well, at least there's that. With 22 pages of comments to read, I'm sure I've got my own work cut out for me for the weekend.
Thank you for sharing, because I wouldn't have seen it otherwise...

Again, Apple user. As a soldier with children, I cannot justify spending thousands on a single computer. Ain't happening.

Seriously it is too thin and just makes me go dizzy.

Just because you CAN change things doesn't mean you should change EVERYTHING.

I can really only kind of go to GR on my tablet. The queasy stomach, headache and eye strain is a bit less bothersome there than on the laptop. But only a bit.

And now GR members are doing all the work to fix this mess through their feedback. What a big fail of the website technical people at GR.

Also, thank you for increasing the font size on reviews, group discussions, etc. that I normally visit. I actually only have to make the screen 125%, which is what I was doing before the change. The font seems to be darker, too, though that may be my imagination.
Things are not perfect, since the font still seems too skinny or the background is still to bright or something. I'm still squinting, and I find it uncomfortable to be here for a long time. But I can stick around for a while at least.
I still think that Classic Coke...er Classic Goodreads---was better, but this now is at least an improvement from the initial disaster.
Been that way before the change."
That option existed before the change, but not for very long, I think.
Why change the location of dates read? >:| Oh, right! To make sure we know that GRT is busy.....
