Did You Notice Something a Little Different?

Posted by Maryana Pinchuk on December 15, 2015
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.

If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.

What’s different?

  • To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.

  • To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.

  • To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.
  • Before:

    After:

Our approach was simple: Improve the usability of the site and give it a cleaner, more modern look, while preserving the familiar feel of Goodreads—a unique home for readers.

Let us know what you think!

Thanks for letting us know Samy, I've reported this to the design team. If possible, could you send through some specific examples (screenshots/links) to support (at) goodreads (dot) com?

    message 2202: by Richard (new)

Richard Idly asking... How come Merriweather looks crisper and has higher contrast on the Google specimen site at the same size? Both have RGB(white) backgrounds, but apparently here the body-text font isn't black.

Won't work for me. My public library does NOT allow its patrons to mess with the computer settings. Got any OTHER way of fixing it for people like me?

    message 2204: by Margo (new)

Margo This "fix" may have improved readability of GR blurb, but has made posted reveiws less readable by redusing line spacing

    message 2205: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy TERRIBLE!! JUST LOOK AT THE TWO PAGE COMPARISONS ABOVE. ONE FLOWS AND ONE IS CHOPPY AND HARD ON THE EYE. PLEASE DON'T "IMPROVE" THE VISUAL ASPECTS OF THE SITE!!!

    message 2206: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy Don't like the removal of the bars that differentiate sections - now it is just all text that runs together. No"style" at all now.

    message 2207: by Laura (new)

Laura I noticed before I read this and was very happy with the new look.
Maybe older eyes appreciate the brightness more, but for me it is much easier to read. A much cleaner look overall.

Exactly! There is no artistry in this - it looks robotic.

    message 2209: by Jane (new)

Jane Some of the book covers in my Listopia choices don't show up at all.

    message 2210: by M'rella (new)

M'rella Ha-ha! GR is looking at this thread and thinking:

Great. They found add-ons, plug-ins and extensions. That solves it. All is well! Carry on as usual.

And off it goes onto its next f*ck up adventure.

    message 2211: by Jane (new)

Jane And of course there are low-tech people like me who wouldn't know one of those add-ons et cetera if it bit me. I guess I just put up with this dreck?

    message 2212: by kierra (new)

kierra Works fine on my Android, but is torture on my computer. I can't even write a review with these fonts :(

    message 2213: by Sara (new)

Sara Please, please! This is so hard to read for my very old eyes.

Meanwhile, I'm just waiting for Booklikes to finish importing all my Goodreads data.

    message 2215: by Alexandria (new)

Alexandria Honestly, I understand why people hate it when the font doesn't work properly. When it turns out how it's supposed to look though, I find that I quite like it. Unfortunately, there's no point if Goodreads can't get it to work for everyone :(

    message 2216: by Karekon (new)

Karekon *Sigh* Please people, this is why we need font OPTIONS, I say the same as others, I find this font harder to read. Its like someone put the alphabet into one of those machines that compress trash.

    message 2217: by priscila (new)

priscila It's a little difficult to read but i love it!

Yes, a couple of OPTIONS would be good. Perhaps this new color scheme and font is good for people on SmartDevices, but it's very hard on the eyes on a large monitor. I have a 25in monitor and high-def settings, and this is just a massive bright-white page, very tiring.

Please, couldn't there be an option to put it back the way it was? Standard fonts, softer colors. Choices for SmartDevices and PC/Mac users?

    message 2219: by CatBookMom (new)

CatBookMom Techies, if you want to see a website with good visual appeal and good fonts, go look at Ravelry dot com. All that work is done by a tech genius, and he's keeping millions of daily users very happy. He doesn't make changes just to 'be more cool', he understands utility and the possibility of a lot of users on a lot of platforms and devices.

Goodreads, please look at this. The headers are the main thing that are missing that are bothering me at the moment. The box around profiles and reviews is SO important, and it is something that shouldn't be removed.

Illiterate Bibliophile I like the reduction in link colors. I like how the new font looks (really I do, no sugarcoating!), but it is indeed not as readable as the previous one.

Penumbra Thanks Michael and DarkChaplain! Adding the tweaks on top of Stylish is working great. And it got rid of the horrid round icon, yay! :)

    message 2224: by Helen (new)

Helen Why do I, the end user, have to make changes to a product in order to make it function properly? That's the job of the product designer--Goodreads.

Well... I did this primarily for me, and white text on a dark background is my idea of reading hell. Talk about headaches! ;) I would recommend maybe contacting the dark theme creator and seeing about changing the fonts there?

Penumbra Helen wrote: "Why do I, the end user, have to make changes to a product in order to make it function properly? That's the job of the product designer--Goodreads."

Because simply, they want to do what they want to do even if the new layout physically hurts the users of the site. They don't care enough to change it back, or create options and someone's, or multiple someone's, egos are on the line. It's hard for management and people in charge to admit mistakes.

I'm guessing they're like politicians, they'll dance around the topic and pretend they've listened when they haven't, over-blowing the fixes they've made when the fixes haven't added up too much at all. Simply changing the site back and starting over is the logical way. But they aren't doing logical.

    message 2229: by Eddie (new)

Eddie I encourage everyone here... to use adblock.. till Goodreads starts to take us seriously...

    message 2230: by Penumbra (new)

    message 2233: by Jenn (new)

Jenn I am very disheartened that they are responding to some people's posts about random glitches but have said nothing to anyone asking them to change the font and colors back or to something different. They are ignoring the problem completely, that we can see.

MomToKippy The screen shots above are not even accurate and do not fully show the font change within the review.

Holli For the one who did the Stylish theme with the goodreads fix, thank you! I can look at the page now without my eyes crying for mercy. You are my hero.

    message 2236: by ✰ Liz ✰ (new)

✰ Liz ✰ I feel like the new font color is too washed out and it makes it very difficult to read. The other day my eyes were watering while trying to write a review. I am so excited that GR is working on refreshing their look but I think overall, this look feels more outdated than new and improved. I sincerely hope that you will darken the font. I spend so much time on GR everyday and my eyes hurt from looking at the new colors! Thank you for asking for our feedback.

I wish every site could be ravelry. Sometimes in the GR forums, I want to click back to the original post somebody responded to but I can't.

    Functionality is a marvelous thing.

Lobstergirl Can someone who is a GR employee acknowledge the bug I reported in post #2242 on p. 45? It is a two-part bug, one part is a longstanding issue and the second part is new as of the redesign. I am unable to vote on listopias until this bug is fixed.

    message 2245: by Richard (new)

Richard Hmmm. The size contrast between things like book titles and the body text is still too much. Small things are too small and should be bumped up in size.

message 2246: by Lanko (last edited Dec 17, 2015 05:38PM) (new)

Lanko I'm having a problem here (use Opera). My friends names still appear in black instead of blue like in the "After" picture.

EDIT: Apparently only in the review of a book the names appear in blue. Could you please make it the same for the normal update feed? Everything written in black seems so boring.
