A retired CIA agent finds a different kind of trouble in small-town coastal Maine. A team of lawyers seeks justice in 1968 Virginia. A baffling murder mystery unfolds in an alternate-universe Cairo.

These are just three of the stories on offer in today’s collection, a specially curated assortment of mystery novels selected for Outstanding Subgenre Achievement. Well, that’s not a technical category, but it is indicative of what we’re aiming for.

This collection aims to be useful for mystery readers in the mood for a specific subgenre—or looking to try out a new one.

We’ve cast a pretty wide net, too. Here’s where you can find the source books for recent TV adaptations next to gold-plated genre classics nearly 100 years old. Cozy mysteries that do interesting new things with dumplings and sheep. Books that spawned beloved series exploring a particular historical topic—the Black experience in postwar Los Angeles, say. You might even find a Pulitzer Prize winner.

Be sure to check out the Speculative Mysteries section for stories on the imaginative edge of narrative—time travel, deep-space sabotage, and the occasional indentured lesbian necromancer.
