The 40 Most Read Books of the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge (So Far)

Posted by Cybil on June 12, 2023

Time once again, gentle readers, for our midyear check-in on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, in which readers push themselves by pledging to read a set number of books for the year. Lots of activity this time around! Six million participants and more than 250 million books pledged?! Crazy numbers!

We’ve collected below the most popular books completed so far in this year’s Reading Challenge. That is to say, the books that people are marking "read" as part of this year's Challenge.

There are a few clear takeaways here at the halfway point. As is typical, the list tends to favor a few Very Popular Authors, each of whom has multiple individual books clocking in. For instance, Colleen HooverTaylor Jenkins Reid, and Sarah J. Maas. Romance continues to be a popular genre in the Challenge, but you’ll find other specimens, too: domestic thrillers, inventive fantasy, giant octopi, this sort of thing. Not surprisingly, you’ll also find plenty of nominees and winners of past Goodreads Choice Awards.

Take a leisurely scroll through the images below, click through the cover images for more details, and feel free to add to your own Want to Read shelf.

Ginny I've read 4 on this list, really enjoyed only one (Remarkably Bright Creatures), don't have any of the others on my to-read list. My favorite books this year have been Delia Ephron's Left On Tenth and Jon Cohen's Harry's Trees.

message 156: by Tracy Marie (new)

Tracy Marie I've read 15 of these titles.

message 157: by Ange (new)

Ange I've read 11 of these over the years. A lot in winter 2021. Some as new releases. I tried CH, but couldn't handle the overblown drama. Don't judge me 😊

message 158: by Ange (new)

Ange I wish there was a DNF button. Is that a thing? A few of these would be on that list

message 159: by M ☾ (new)

M ☾ 10/40

Marissa Connell 20/40

message 161: by Donna (new)

message 163: by Sham (new)

Sham Who is Colleen Hoover’s PR agent? lol

message 164: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Beerman I've only read 1 so better than me! lol

message 165: by Sara (new)

Sara Ange wrote: "I wish there was a DNF button. Is that a thing? A few of these would be on that list"

There's a way you can create one (as I did on my profile). If you go to "my books" and then "edit" your bookshelves, you can create a DNF shelf. Make sure it is marked as "exclusive" because then books can only be marked as TBR, currently reading, read, or DNF once at a time.

message 166: by Savanna (new)

Savanna Pierce 14/40 read!! And starting Remarkably Bright Creatures for 15.

message 167: by Christina (new)

Christina 20/40

message 168: by Kira (new)

Kira Have read six from this list

message 169: by Rav (new)

Rav 0/40
Three are on my tbr though and I have currently borrowed out The Silent Patient from my local library so I guess it'll be 1/40 pretty soon. As for the other two books (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and The Midnight Library, I'll probably have to wait a millennium until I get to them

Good for you (reading the Florida censored books I mean) The only book I've read is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo which has a stunning cover, but the book itself is good rather than great.

I have another three on my to-read list, but I'm not expecting to get to them any time soon.

message 171: by Shireen (new)

Shireen Hakim I've read 4 and I'm reading a 5th!

message 172: by Saidy (new)

Saidy 6 read and 8 on my TBR

Javier Fernandez I've read 0 of 40 so far and I'm happy with my pace of reading them.

message 176: by L (new)

L I have read 77 books so far this year. I am happy to report that none of them are on this list. :D

message 177: by Nina (new)

Nina I've read.... 1.
Although I do tend not to read 'new' books. Jennette McCurdy's memoir was an exception because I love a good owning-your-own-life story.

message 178: by Bana AZ (new)

Bana AZ Sarah wrote: "Side eye to everyone criticising what people are reading. This is a hobby not homework. Let people read what they want!"

Agreed

message 179: by Dana (new)

Dana Salman Ange wrote: "I wish there was a DNF button. Is that a thing? A few of these would be on that list"

You can make one in your bookshelves. Just click edit bookshelves, create one and call it DNF, and then tick the circle that says "exclusive".

message 180: by Megan (new)

Megan Trowe 18 read, 1 currently reading, 1 DNF 😳

message 181: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra Pałac I cant believe the amount of CoHo books here. That should be illegal.

message 182: by Ashley (new)

Ashley As this list is made up of mostly the same three authors, i'd really like to see the what the next 40 books are just to see if that would give us a bit more variety LOL

message 183: by Emma (new)

Emma I’ve read 14, but not all this year!

message 184: by Serge (new)

Serge the books I had read I for the most part enjoyed them and the rest are books I just don’t plan on reading

message 185: by Serge (new)

Serge i’m surprised fourth wing isn’t here seeing how EVERYONE is reading that book right now

message 186: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Love to see that I’ve read most of these books 👏🏾

message 187: by Librada (new)

Librada O Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"

I thought it was going to get better somewhere in the middle. When it didn't, I thought the ending was going to be great. It wasn't. Meh.

message 188: by Librada (new)

Librada O I've read 5/40.

I don't usually read romance but decided to give one a try. I regret looking at this list. I picked a singular romance, which was just a "Harlequin Romance" with a different cover. Never doing that again.

message 189: by T.ScottReviews (new)

T.ScottReviews Amanda wrote: "Rania wrote: "I read some of those years ago. There are tones of better writers out there."

Hopefully some of them know the difference between "tones" and "tons.""

For someone who says leave people to read what they want, you're fairly judgemental. Also correcting grammar/spelling is actually considered ableist.

message 192: by T.ScottReviews (new)

Also, will never read Colleen Hoover. I do have some TJR on TBR.

Other TBR:

Song of Achilles
The Silent Patient
I'm Glad My Mom Died
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow
Lessons In Chemistry
The Midnight Library

message 197: by Luana (new)

Luana 10/40 and some of these books were the most horrible books i‘ve ever read

message 198: by Silverin (new)

Silverin I've DNF'd 3 and read 1 which I regret... None of these books sound good for me, so I guess I'll treat this list as an anti-recommendation.

message 199: by Helen (new)

Helen Simpson My favourite book to read this year was A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon. I couldn’t put it down.
I also re-read On Chesil Beach - a masterpiece!
I’m a fan of historical fiction…am waiting for Phillipa Gregory’s next offering!
I’ve only read 3 of the listed books. Most of them are not in my wheelhouse!

message 200: by Haven (new)

Haven Blackfire I have read one book, and have another one in my 'Want to read'
