The 40 Most Read Books of the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge (So Far)

Time once again, gentle readers, for our midyear check-in on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, in which readers push themselves by pledging to read a set number of books for the year. Lots of activity this time around! Six million participants and more than 250 million books pledged?! Crazy numbers!
We’ve collected below the most popular books completed so far in this year’s Reading Challenge. That is to say, the books that people are marking "read" as part of this year's Challenge.
There are a few clear takeaways here at the halfway point. As is typical, the list tends to favor a few Very Popular Authors, each of whom has multiple individual books clocking in. For instance, Colleen Hoover, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Sarah J. Maas. Romance continues to be a popular genre in the Challenge, but you’ll find other specimens, too: domestic thrillers, inventive fantasy, giant octopi, this sort of thing. Not surprisingly, you’ll also find plenty of nominees and winners of past Goodreads Choice Awards.
Take a leisurely scroll through the images below, click through the cover images for more details, and feel free to add to your own Want to Read shelf.

I've read 4 on this list, really enjoyed only one (Remarkably Bright Creatures), don't have any of the others on my to-read list. My favorite books this year have been Delia Ephron's Left On Tenth and Jon Cohen's Harry's Trees.

24/40 but only one on this list, The Last Thing He Told Me, which was okay, nothing spectacular. Favorites so far, London Seance Society and Weyward.
I've read 11 of these over the years. A lot in winter 2021. Some as new releases. I tried CH, but couldn't handle the overblown drama. Don't judge me 😊
I've read 39 books so far this year. From this list I've read: 0/40.
Only one title on my TBR: The Silent Patient.
I'm happy about this.
Ange wrote: "I wish there was a DNF button. Is that a thing? A few of these would be on that list"There's a way you can create one (as I did on my profile). If you go to "my books" and then "edit" your bookshelves, you can create a DNF shelf. Make sure it is marked as "exclusive" because then books can only be marked as TBR, currently reading, read, or DNF once at a time.
0/40 Three are on my tbr though and I have currently borrowed out The Silent Patient from my local library so I guess it'll be 1/40 pretty soon. As for the other two books (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and The Midnight Library, I'll probably have to wait a millennium until I get to them

I have another three on my to-read list, but I'm not expecting to get to them any time soon.
I've read.... 1. Although I do tend not to read 'new' books. Jennette McCurdy's memoir was an exception because I love a good owning-your-own-life story.
Sarah wrote: "Side eye to everyone criticising what people are reading. This is a hobby not homework. Let people read what they want!"Agreed
Ange wrote: "I wish there was a DNF button. Is that a thing? A few of these would be on that list"You can make one in your bookshelves. Just click edit bookshelves, create one and call it DNF, and then tick the circle that says "exclusive".
As this list is made up of mostly the same three authors, i'd really like to see the what the next 40 books are just to see if that would give us a bit more variety LOL
the books I had read I for the most part enjoyed them and the rest are books I just don’t plan on reading
Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"I thought it was going to get better somewhere in the middle. When it didn't, I thought the ending was going to be great. It wasn't. Meh.
I've read 5/40. I don't usually read romance but decided to give one a try. I regret looking at this list. I picked a singular romance, which was just a "Harlequin Romance" with a different cover. Never doing that again.
I will never read Colleen Hoover in my lifeLike literally wtf is everyone reading right now
I get SJM her books are great
But literally DIVERSITY people NOT COLLEEN HOOVER

For someone who says leave people to read what they want, you're fairly judgemental. Also correcting grammar/spelling is actually considered ableist.

0/40 because I don't suffer from fomo. Also, will never read Colleen Hoover. I do have some TJR on TBR.
Other TBR:
Song of Achilles
The Silent Patient
I'm Glad My Mom Died
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow
Lessons In Chemistry
The Midnight Library

Same I will never read Colleen Hoover though I do read SJM
I've DNF'd 3 and read 1 which I regret... None of these books sound good for me, so I guess I'll treat this list as an anti-recommendation.
My favourite book to read this year was A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon. I couldn’t put it down. I also re-read On Chesil Beach - a masterpiece!
I’m a fan of historical fiction…am waiting for Phillipa Gregory’s next offering!
I’ve only read 3 of the listed books. Most of them are not in my wheelhouse!
