The 40 Most Read Books of the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge (So Far)

Time once again, gentle readers, for our midyear check-in on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, in which readers push themselves by pledging to read a set number of books for the year. Lots of activity this time around! Six million participants and more than 250 million books pledged?! Crazy numbers!
We’ve collected below the most popular books completed so far in this year’s Reading Challenge. That is to say, the books that people are marking "read" as part of this year's Challenge.
There are a few clear takeaways here at the halfway point. As is typical, the list tends to favor a few Very Popular Authors, each of whom has multiple individual books clocking in. For instance, Colleen Hoover, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Sarah J. Maas. Romance continues to be a popular genre in the Challenge, but you’ll find other specimens, too: domestic thrillers, inventive fantasy, giant octopi, this sort of thing. Not surprisingly, you’ll also find plenty of nominees and winners of past Goodreads Choice Awards.
Take a leisurely scroll through the images below, click through the cover images for more details, and feel free to add to your own Want to Read shelf.

I have read 15 of these books and most of the rest are on my To Read list. I've read 38 of my 12 book goal. Lol 😆 overachiever here
flag
I have read 16/40 of this list and a few on my TBR, but the remaining are a nope for me. I'm 64 books in this year and some standouts for me were Yellowface, Hell Bent, The Serpent & The Wings of Night.
I’ve read 7 books from this list. Some books that I’ve read so far and thoroughly enjoyed which are not on this list: Demon Copperhead, The People We Keep, West With Giraffes, and Horse
why are y’all judging what other ppl are reading, reading is reading. everyone has different opinions, you can’t judge someone off of the words they read on a paper
I've read 10 of these books mostly because one of my book clubs chose them. Two were recommend by people I met at a concert. I only read one of the Colleen Hoover books and it was enough to know I don't want to read anymore.
Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"I think that was kinda the point? It’s like a book with little plot and it basically just works if you get the vibes, i like books like that but I get why you would dnf it, you kinda need to be in the right place time and mood to appreciate it, it’s really character focused which might not be your thing but maybe if you’re like in a really chill mood you might want to try again because it really is great if you have the time and patience for it
Who puts these ratings honestly, most of them are boring romance/booktok . Come on where did the good books genre's go!!!!!
I loved Good Girl's Guide to Murder trilogy. The Midnight Library is SO good. Song of Achilles was very overrated.
Julia wrote: "Amber wrote: "Y’all need to read some non fiction like damn. And step away from the Colleen Hoover."100%"
You are so right. And the non-fiction is Harry.
Amber wrote: "Y’all need to read some non fiction like damn. And step away from the Colleen Hoover."you are so right!
so much romance. Not that I don't read romance, but seriously... Doesn't anyone else pick up a tome or two in the summer? Or older better books? John McPhee, for instance, is making me think.
For a site full of readers, y'all have astonishingly bad reading comprehension. As another commenter pointed out, this list is the raw data of the most read books this year on Goodreads. OF COURSE it skews young and female, that is the largest demographic on this site! OF COURSE it skews towards "grocery store books," that's what's popular! Why are you all shocked that the popular books...are on the popular books list? Worms for brains...
Not the Colleen Hoover books occupying the top spots 💀 y’all need to touch grass and start reading something cleverer
Seems your list has an agenda to promote some authors and leave others out. Try The Cloisters, House on the Cerulean Sea, The Magic of Lemondrop Pie, The Abolitionists Daughter, finish The Inheritance Games series. Try Anne Hillerman. Lots of good books not on this list.
I’ve read 27/40, but many of these are from last year (or older). My favorite from this list is Remarkably Bright Creatures.
